Into the Woods Male Vocal RangesHi, I have a question:
What is the difference between the vocal ranges for the male parts in ITW? I've seen a few places online that said that both the Baker and Jack have a range from A to high G, but the Baker is listed as baritone and Jack as tenor. Is this incorrect, or what's going on there? Both of those notes are within, though admittedly on the reaches, of my range.
Thanks a lot! I'm auditioning for ITW (my ultimate favorite play) soon and would love to be able to audition for the Baker, but hope I can sing his parts!

The Baker: Baritone (A to high G )
The Baker is the lead and an older man. He is probably listed as a baritone because he often does not need to hit high F's and G's and he has to have a more mature, rounding sound to his voice, unlike...
Jack: Tenor (A to high G )
He is supporting, but I assume must sound pretty young and have a smooth tenor voice. Plus, I for one know that he hits several high F's and F#'s in "Giants in the Sky".
The other male parts are-
Narrator/Mysterious Man: Baritone (G to high E )
A nice, funny part to go for if being the lead kind of intimidates you. Probably the best speaking role in the show, as in Act 1 and about halfway through Act 2 he tells the story. He also can be the weird Mysterious Man and gets his final song, a duet with the Baker.
Cinderella's Prince: Baritone (B to high F )
The bigger of the two princes. He can potentially steal the show with "Agony" and gets to seduce the Baker's Wife. In Act 2, he appears with the other prince to reprise "Agony". Though that seems to be about all he does singing wise, he constantly runs onstage in Act 1 looking for Cinderella.
Rapunzel's Prince: Baritone (C# to high F)
Although he's the smaller part of the two princes, he still has a lot to do with Rapunzel's storyline. As mentioned before, he can steal the show with "Agony" and its reprise. In the DVD, this character also played a very big favorite...
Wolf: Baritone (B to high bG )
It's not an Act 2 role at all, which explains why usually one of the princes plays him. Though he can act his creepiest and have a lot of fun with "Hello, Little Girl". When timed with the right conveyor belts and Little Red reactions, the song works perfectly.
Two other non-singing male parts are Cinderella's Father and the Steward. The Father only really appears in the Prologue and a little bit of Act 2. The Steward is almost always with Cinderella's Prince, except in Act 2 when he loses him and he ends up killing Jack's mother.
The point I'm trying to make is that all these parts in ITW are great, it's just a great show in general. Don't be too disappointed if you get the Baker, anyone from Jack to the Wolf would be great parts too that all have their moments. That's why this show is so great, it's a melding of different parts.
