Into The Woods as a major motion picture

I know this failed to materialize in the nineties, but if there was ever a time for it, it's now.

The first obvious casting choice that jumps to mind is Jim Dale as the narrator, since his work on Pushing Daisies proves that he has the perfect deadpan but whimsical delivery for this type of show.

Otherwise, Tim Curry as the voice of the wolf, Christopher Walken as the Mysterious Man, and a cameo by Bernadette Peters as Cinderella's Mother.
wicked_boy

I personally don't think ITW would work as a big motion picture, I prefer it on stage. It has that "feeling" about it.
Monsieur D'Arque

I found it just as cinematic as Sweeney.
wicked_boy

They actaully made it? I think I misread the original post.
Monsieur D'Arque

No, I was saying I would like to see one.
pish123c

Just keep Tim Burton away from it if it ever does happen. I'd hate to see HBC as The Baker's Wife in a lacy goth corset.
wicked_boy

Ohhh. I'd like to see a motion picture of every musical, I think that a motion picture could ever get the "feel" of ITW though.
kozafluitmusique

If there was an ITW musical movie, no matter how small my resume would be, I would audition. Very Happy

...if i could.

I love HBC, but I have to agree. Unless she's getting a bit part, there's no part for her in ITW.
Snow_White

Tim Burton would probably have her play the Witch.
VictorVonDoom

Heh. I could actually see Helena Bonham Carter as the Witch.
music is my life!!!

yeah, that'd be funky. i'd (of course!) take pride in being hired as red!

I do hope you're joking.
Maybe Idina Menzel as the Witch?

Anyway, I read in an article that Burton hates most musicals, so Sweeney was the exception.

Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride (probably his most recognized works now other than Sweeney) are both sort of musicals. Neutral

I don't think she's ever played a witch before... other than her over - long run in Wicked.

[tryingtobesarcastic/]
Snow_White

No I wasn't joking at all. If Burton directed ITW he would cast Helena as the Witch.

I didn't say it would necessarily be a good call, all I said was it would happen.

Idina? Hell no. Don't get me wrong, great voice, nothing against her- but hell no.
mastachen

Johnny Depp as the Baker... anyone?
Snow_White

hahahah! Can you even imagine? I wonder if they would keep in the white hair stripe...to, uhm... symbolize the stress of not being able to have a child Wink

Nah, Johnny would definitely be the Wolf.
mastachen

Ed Sanders as Jack.
Snow_White

That might actually be really cute...
ConverseSneaker

I actually like the idea of Helena as the Witch. Acting wise, she could pull it off, but can she vocally?
Snow_White

It would certainly be a different Witch than what we are all used to...but then again everyone seemed to adjust well to a new type of Mrs. Lovett
Salome

I could easily see Johnny Dsepp as Cinderella's Prince/Wolf. with p[ossibly Jude Law as Rapunzels prince.

Anthony Hopkins would be a wonderful Narrator/Mysteriopus Man.

Helena wouldnt be a bad Witch..but I'd say Cate Blanchett,Catherine Zeta Jones or Kate Beckinsale over Helena.

Emily Watson or Anna Friel as Bakers Wife.

Kathy Bates as Jack's Mother
Kragey

Salome wrote:

Hell yes.
Monsieur D'Arque

Kyle McLachlan, the original choice for one of the Princes, would make a decent Baker now.

I think in a film, the Mysterious Man need not double the Narrator. In fact, having an unseen voice as the Narrator could lead to some interesting film tricks. Consider a giant's hand reaching (through the magic of 3-D) through the screen, over the audience's head, and returning with the body of a voice-over artist.

Is your casting based on who would look good for the role, or who can actually sing it? lol
wicked_boy

How about Julie Walters for Jack's Mum. She has a very wide playing age and is hilarious and can sing.

I love her on Acorn Antiques - the musical.

I foresee a trip to the library on the weekend.
blueveil

In all seriousness, I can see Patti lupone as the Giantess.
Snow_White

Amy Adams as Cinderella...we know she plays an awesome princess...we know she has a wicked voice- so why the heck not? Plus she's fabulous.

Furthermore what about Abigail Breslin as Little Red? If she could sing it...
Monsieur D'Arque

Abigail would have to fight her archnemesis Dakota Fanning over who gets to do Sondheim and who has to do a movie with horses, though.

As for Jack, I like the idea that he's not a teenager or a kid, he's a twenty-something man who's just too dumb to leave the nest. In that interpretation, wouldn't Jack McBrayer be great?
Snow_White

That would be funny...especially when Red (as a visibly MUCH younger person) says "I'll be your mother now"

Haha I just had this image of Will Farrell petting a cow o_O
musikal_geek

Depends on how old the rest of the cast is... but Nikki Blonsky could certainly pull of Little Red. She probably looks too old, though.
Snow_White

True and she has a pretty young face so I am sure she could pull it off.
rytoast25

niki blonsky would be good

she would add a whole lot of spunk

Catherine Zeta Jones would be amazing.
Hm, Johnny Depp would be good, but for some reason I can see his as the baker's father.
Baker

I'd like to see Annasophia Robb do Little Red Riding Hood.

I actually really like the idea of Amy Adams as Cinderella.
Dots Parasole

If I were a Hollywood producer with 3 Hollywood casting directors it would probably go something like this:

Baker: Adrien Brody

Bakers Wife: Cate Blanchett

Jack: Zach Efron

Little Red: Abigail Breslin

Princes: Patrick Wilson/Patrick Dempsey

Narrator: Peter O'Toole

The Witch: Michelle Pfieffer

Cinderella: Natalie Portman

Jacks Mother: Joanna Gleason

Grandmother/Cinderella's Mother: Julie Christie

Voice of Giant: Luise Rainer
Monsieur D'Arque

Cinderella's Mother: Christine Baranski
Baker

Narrator: Jim Dale
Baker: Lee Pace
Baker's Wife: Anna Friel
Mysterious Man: David Kelly
Witch: Helena Bonham Carter
Rapunzel: Anne Hathaway
Rapunzel's Prince: Josh Groban
Cinderella's Prince: Patrick Wilson
Cinderella: Amy Adams
Cinderella's Father: ?
Cinderella's Mother: Meryl Streep
Steward: Timothy Spall
Stepmother: Michelle Pfieffer
Florinda: Reese Witherspoon
Lucinda: Brittany Snow
Jack: Lucas Grabeel
Jack's Mother: Julie Walters
Voice of Giantess: Susan Sarandon
Little Red Riding Hood: Annasophia Robb
Granny: Miriam Margolyes
Wolf: CGI with a voice over
musikal_geek

I think Groban would be a wicked Baker.

Screw Nikki Blonsky as Little Red...She's much too old. I'd cast that cute little girl from Little Miss Sunshine...What is her name? Abigail Breslin?
lottielou22

Michelle Pfeiffer would make a fabulous stepmother! Also, if Raul Julia wasn't dead, I think he'd be a pretty hilarious Mysterious Man. Or Christopher Lloyd would. And for some reason, Alex Trebek just popped into my head.

Terry Gilliam would make ItW the greatest movie musical the world has ever seen.

Baker - Johnny Depp or Jim Carrey or Steve Carrell or Martin Short
Baker's Wife - Laura Linney
Witch - Helena Bonham Carter or Laura Michelle Kelly
Jack - ...............Me.
Little Red - Abigail Breslin

Wolf - Tim Curry or Alan Rickman
Cinderella's Prince - James Marsden
Rapunzel's Prince - Some newcomer.

Yuk!
HBC as the Witch? Her voice isn't strong enough, and god forbid she talk-rap... Bernadette Peters pwn'd Vanessa Williams, and Vanessa had a KILLER voice. If HBC even TRIED to be the Witch, I'd die.

Wouldn't mind it as a Burton film, but Johnny Depp would have to be one of the princes.... him singing agony would make me laugh xD

Who directed "Series of Unfortunate Events"? They should make a movie out of ITW. Terribly bright, yet at the same time dark enough to make it only slightly gothic.

You're right, he's not a young boy; He's an adolescent. I've always taken the "At your age?" type lines and his relatipnship with his mother to be along the lines of "Aren't you getting a little old for this?".

Uh... no. Then it just becomes a farce. Imagine Will Farrell singing Giants in the Sky. Jack is supposed to be between 13 and 20, in my opinion. Any older and it's just silly.

Fair enough, if you want to see it that way. But I don't think it should be to the point that you've got a grown man obsessing over a cow and living with his mother. These are the peculiarities that teenage boys go through.

Plus, Into the Woods is faithful to the original fairy tales otherwise, so why randomly make the "lad" Jack a grown man?

However the Sweeney Todd film was an R rated musical that was only on limited release until recently. Of course it didn't put up big numbers.

Into the Woods has a bit more wide appeal, with the fairy tales and the farce-like comedy, and would probably only get a PG or maybe a PG-13 rating depending upon how it's done. I would also imagine it would be more of a wide-release film as well.
