Into The Woods as a major motion pictureI know this failed to materialize in the nineties, but if there was ever a time for it, it's now.
The first obvious casting choice that jumps to mind is Jim Dale as the narrator, since his work on Pushing Daisies proves that he has the perfect deadpan but whimsical delivery for this type of show.
Otherwise, Tim Curry as the voice of the wolf, Christopher Walken as the Mysterious Man, and a cameo by Bernadette Peters as Cinderella's Mother.

I personally don't think ITW would work as a big motion picture, I prefer it on stage. It has that "feeling" about it.

I found it just as cinematic as Sweeney.

Just keep Tim Burton away from it if it ever does happen. I'd hate to see HBC as The Baker's Wife in a lacy goth corset.

Ohhh. I'd like to see a motion picture of every musical, I think that a motion picture could ever get the "feel" of ITW though.

I could easily see Johnny Dsepp as Cinderella's Prince/Wolf. with p[ossibly Jude Law as Rapunzels prince.
Anthony Hopkins would be a wonderful Narrator/Mysteriopus Man.
Helena wouldnt be a bad Witch..but I'd say Cate Blanchett,Catherine Zeta Jones or Kate Beckinsale over Helena.

Kyle McLachlan, the original choice for one of the Princes, would make a decent Baker now.
I think in a film, the Mysterious Man need not double the Narrator. In fact, having an unseen voice as the Narrator could lead to some interesting film tricks. Consider a giant's hand reaching (through the magic of 3-D) through the screen, over the audience's head, and returning with the body of a voice-over artist.

Abigail would have to fight her archnemesis Dakota Fanning over who gets to do Sondheim and who has to do a movie with horses, though.

If I were a Hollywood producer with 3 Hollywood casting directors it would probably go something like this:
Baker: Adrien Brody
Bakers Wife: Cate Blanchett
Jack: Zach Efron
Little Red: Abigail Breslin
Princes: Patrick Wilson/Patrick Dempsey
Narrator: Peter O'Toole
The Witch: Michelle Pfieffer
Cinderella: Natalie Portman
Jacks Mother: Joanna Gleason

Voice of Giant: Luise Rainer

Narrator: Jim Dale
Baker: Lee Pace

Mysterious Man: David Kelly

Rapunzel: Anne Hathaway
Rapunzel's Prince: Josh Groban
Cinderella's Prince: Patrick Wilson
Cinderella: Amy Adams
Cinderella's Father: ?
Cinderella's Mother: Meryl Streep
Steward: Timothy Spall
Stepmother: Michelle Pfieffer
Florinda: Reese Witherspoon
Lucinda: Brittany Snow
Jack: Lucas Grabeel
Jack's Mother: Julie Walters
Voice of Giantess: Susan Sarandon
Little Red Riding Hood: Annasophia Robb

Wolf: CGI with a voice over

Fair enough, if you want to see it that way. But I don't think it should be to the point that you've got a grown man obsessing over a cow and living with his mother. These are the peculiarities that teenage boys go through.
Plus, Into the Woods is faithful to the original fairy tales otherwise, so why randomly make the "lad" Jack a grown man?

Into the Woods has a bit more wide appeal, with the fairy tales and the farce-like comedy, and would probably only get a PG or maybe a PG-13 rating depending upon how it's done. I would also imagine it would be more of a wide-release film as well.
