The Duchess of Mint

Interesting movie mistakes, observations, etc.

Dear Jesus Christ Superstar Fans,

If you've seen the 1973 movie version of JCS, or if you've seen scenes from that movie, via YouTube, or whatever, you may have noticed movie mistakes, and/ or you may have made some interesting observations about the movie; feel free to discuss those mistakes and/ or observations.

I haven't seen the entire movie, and I personally find Ted Neeley's Southern (?) accent to be sooo annoying (with regards to the fact that he's portraying Jesus, while at the same time sounding so un-Biblical) that I don't know if I could watch the entire movie; yet, I have seen some scenes from the movie on www.youtube.com, and so I can discuss at least one major movie mistake/ observation.

During the song Heaven on Their Minds, Judas is walking along and singing. When he reaches the portion of the song during which he says "Listen, Jesus! Do you care for your race? Don't you see we must keep in our place? We are occupied! Have you forgotten how put down we are? I am frightened by the crowd, for we are getting much too loud, and they'll crush us if we go to far!", he seems to take something from behind, or from underneath his left arm (during the beginning of the line "Listen, Jesus..."); then, when he says "Don't you see...", THE VIEWER CAN SEE that there is clearly something in Judas' right hand!. Slightly later on during the song, when he says "We are occupied," HE (Judas) seems to be...occupied...with the stealthy business of switching (behind his back) whatever's in his right hand to his left hand, so that, when he says the word "crush," he can literally crush what turns out to be sand with his left hand.

I don't have any problem with being able to see the ball of sand in Judas' hand. I don't have too much of a problem with his switching it while his hands are behind his back. I think that what's unnatural about this scene is the fact that Judas seems to retrieve the ball of sand from somewhere unseen. I just don't understand why Judas would take a ball of sand from his shirt, or whatever. It doesn't even look as though he is really taking much of anything from anywhere, and yet, when he seems to have a ball of sand in his hand, he REALLY seems to have a ball of sand in his hand. What's worse is that he does all of that during ONE long-to-close-up shot, so there couldn't have even been someone (who was out of frame) handing the ball of sand to him!

I personally think that the scene would have looked much more natural if, during a long-shot, Judas had stopped briefly to pick up some sand.

I know, I know; I have far too much time on my hands, but still...

Thanks in advance for your replies, but please be certain to clearly mark all spoilers.

What? You didn't know Carl could make sand appear out of nowhere?

Carl was magic.

Come on, it's a metaphor! Judas says, "I have been your right-hand man all along," but then despite his best efforts, the sand appears in his left hand!

DEEP!!!!

Okay, that's probably a load of crap, but it sounds cool so I'm sticking with that.
