So I don't know a thing about Ragtime except I'm going to play oboe/English horn in the pit in a production this summer. This is beyond exciting for me...it's been my dream for years to play in a pit for a musical, so I'm thrilled I'm finally getting the chance. I'm getting the music this Saturday, but...well, I know nothing about the show except I'm playing in it. So what's the music like generally? Everyone says it's a great show.

The score is periodic-early 20th century jazz and, obviously, ragtime.

See if you can find it at your local library.

I got the score from the music director today...and I must say Shocked , for the record, the oboe/English horn part is quite insane.

The score is very faithful to Americana music of the period. There are cakewalks, gospel, ragtime, blues, Jewish music and soaring ballads.

The orchestrations are by the great William David Brohn (probably the best orchestrator in the business) and he won a Tony for them.
