I haven't seen it Broadway yet, but saw it off last year. It was fun. About life in Washington Heights. Latin/Hispanic feel to it. Lots of great dancing. Its fresh and new. Lin-Manuel Miranda said he based it on growing up in that neighborhood and a combo of West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, and Rent.
I love this video Lin-Manuel made on youtube. So funny and anti high school musical. and a lil spring awakening star guest appearance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ep0tpRqaZ4Y I apologize if that link has been posted before. This one is newer and cute too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGoU1HBmNOQ&feature=user |

I just saw it a few weeks ago- about 3 weeks after it opened when I went to New York over spring break. In the Heights is amazing- now one of my favorite musicals. You'll love it!

good GOD i need to see it.
I am IN LOVE. |

It's one of those shows that looks very fun but isn't worth the 100-some dollar admission price, you know? The music sounds great though, so I'll definitely be purchasing the recording when it comes out this summer.

If i lived anywhere near New york or ever could actually afford to go there this and [tos] would be the first things i see. I absolutely can't wait for the recording to come out.

You're all going to hate me but...I give it an "eh" as far as how interested I am in it...I doubt many of you are surprised by this either.

PS. The Demo is REALLY good.
like I was TRULY impressed. |
||||

I feel like this and [tos] are going to become the new Wicked and Spring Awakening.

Ugh. Let's hope not...That'd just ruin it.
| Matthew |
I dunno about [tos]. Well. There's humor for everyone. But like the entire Monkeys and Playbills song is funny if you know some/most/all of the shows. I wouldn't be angry if it got to popular status. I would doubt it'd be big like that. Maybe as big as the SitPwG revival.
In the Heights, I'm not sure what I could say. I mean, it's a phenomenal sscore, but it's not for everyone. Only time will tell with In the Heights. |
||||
| jesuiscommejesuis |
People are already fangirl over [tos]. I dont doubt that within a couple months on Broadway, it will end up being fawned over just like previously mentioned shows. Or it will get no press and sort of die.
I feel like there cannot be a happy medium for [tos]. This is depressing. It should just play Off-Broadway until Hunter, Jeff, Heidi & Susan die. |
||||
| Matthew |
And then their line-up of understudies they created can step in.
| shakalakababy |
i know the world disagrees with me but i don't really care if [tos] and In the Heights become the next Wicked and Spring Awakening. It's not going to change what the shows are, i like a show because of the quality of the show, i could care less about it's fan base. I mean i've been listening to [tos] for the past two years and i'm really happy that they've finally become so successful and have developed such a wide fan base. Good for them, they deserve it. Even if they get a bunch of fangirls obsessing with it (which i don't really see happening) it won't make me stop liking it.

My friend just got back from his SB trip to NYC and saw In The Heights (among other things). This is his review:
In the Heights AMAZING!!!!! Everything from the music to the set to almost every, single actor was simply exceptional. But nothing compares to the absolutely astounding choreography. The crazy hip-hop numbers were just as captivating as the brilliant salsa and Latin ballroom, night club scene. The voices were beyond fantastic and very few people lacked in any way. This is all due to the combined talents of writer, composer, star Lin-Manuel Malinda. I went into this show knowing nothing except for the good reviews it received. But, not only was the story interesting, it was powerful and moving. The second the CR comes out, it will be within my grasp and suggest the same for you. Do not bother asking what to see if taking the journey to New York; the answer is In the Heights. Perhaps the only minor flaws in this were the weak voices of parents: Priscilla Lopez and Carlos Gomez. Each having important songs, it definitely dragged the performance down but not nearly enough to hinder the quality of the show. 4.5 out of 5 Stars Potential Tony Awards Best Musical Best Book of a Musical Best Musical Score Choreography Lead Actor: Lin-Manuel Miranda Direction of a Musical Supporting Actress: Andrea Burns, Karen Olivo, and/or Olga Merediz Lighting Design Yes, he's VERY thorough...hah. I really want to see this!!! |

I still can't decide to see In the Heights or Glory Days...
| musictheatre00 |
So I Finally saw In The Heights yesterday, it was great! The cast was really talented, and shared a lot of chemistry, great music too, in my opinion Lin-Manuel Miranda and Olga Merediz gave great stand-out performances, and Andrιa Burns as Daniela was hilarious, the whole cast in general was great, the set was amazing, great lighting too, my only problem was that I couldn't keep up with the rapping in the show sometimes, but that's more of a problem on my side because I don't listen to a lot of rap, so rated out of ten, I'd give it a 10.

My friend works at Circle and has seen Glory Days already... He said it bored him to DEATH! LOL! He gives it MAYBE a couple of weeks. They did some pretty crappy non-existent PR for that show... In the Heights is electric...go see it! |

In The Heights seemsl ike another bad Adolecent fantasia of dullness like Spring Awakening.
| bare24601! |
Oh really? Thanks for telling me because I was sort of leaning towards Glory Days but now I will reconsider.. |
||||

Salome, out of curiosity...
do you really like ANY shows that have hit broadway in the past few years? because i've never heard you say you like any new shows...and then you go around saying people are close-minded and don't know anything because they might not like some old shows. people could say the same thing about you because you don't like new shows. i'm not trying to diss you or anything, i'm just wondering. |

She loved Grey Gardens, and liked The Producers, and I'm sure there's at least a little more she liked, but I don't remember at the moment the specifics. |

Sorry to call you out on this one, but you must have a very limited knowledge this show. I'm surprised you would make such a snap judgment without seeing the show first. It's about the culture/life of many people, young and old, "In the Heights". I saw it in its off bway incarnation. It's not meant to appeal to just the teeny boppers...it's a pretty universal story. Who's with me when I say the rap that Lin-Manuel does about his Grandma is extremely heartfelt and touching...I've never heard anyone rap with such raw emotion. I don't even LIKE rap all that much! He's brilliant. |
||||
| jazzygirlsings |
She also LOVES DRS...and the Doyle revival of Sweeney...(Did she see the most recent revival of "Follies" through encores? Can't remember if she liked it or not)... |
||||
| Matthew |
Dawn, trust me, it's really good.
| LaurelDP |
I'm glad to hear its good!
I'm seeing it at the end of May, and was hesitant because I hadn't heard much about it. |
||||
| musictheatre00 |
Believe me, it's not. The cast isn't youth based or centered around trends, it's the story of this neighborhood that is almost like an extended family, you have characters from all diferent age ranges, and it's not like the kids are the protagonists and the adults are the antagonists like in Spring Awakening, and although the show is very contemporary, and has a lot of rapping and some hip hop, it's mostly a lot of latin music, like a blend of the different kinds of music that would be listened to by anyone living in a Latin American community. |

I am going to see this on Broadway Saturday 14th June. I hadnt heard much about it before seeing the nominations of the Tony Awards. But it looks fantastic and I cannot wait to see a show on Broadway !
| highkick49 |
This show is pretty great I have to say - it def. deserves all those Tony nominations that's for sure.
The cheorography is really superb and if you don't go for anything go for that. All the more urban and street dancing that they do in this show I feel is a real sign of where more of today's musicals are going to turn to. I def. think we are going to see a lot more shows attempting this type of dance and we are all going to need to start taking a hell of a lot more hip hop classes to attempt to get cast in these shows. |
