IM AUDITIONING FOR BATB - HELP!

Okay, hello, there. I'm a senior in high school and we're doing Beauty and the Beast for our school show. I really really really want a part - specifically Belle. The director we use to have for shows is finally leaving - thank god, so now our chorus teachers are taking over directing the show. I'm new to chorus and am a soprano, but I have been doing musical theatre for 4-5 years now.
Basically my question is, what song can I sing that will guarantee me the role of Belle?

I want to pick a song that is not well known, but that would be perfect for Belle. Preferably nothing too jazzy because I don't want to show too much of my "black-ness" as people tell me. No one thinks I can do it because they only hear me singing songs from Dreamgirls or Aida, but I know I can. Please help me!!! Thanks!

Belle is NOT a soprano. She's a mezzo, I believe.

Hmm

Well, something that I looked up said she was a soprano. Maybe because she has a few high notes. Anyway, I'm a soprano 2 which is basically mezzo. But you didn't help me. What can I audition with that is not well known that will get me the part of Belle?

Quote:
BELLE: Mezzo (Low, low E [4 spaces below staff] to High F)
This is probably the rangiest part in the show. Usually she doesn't need anything lower than an A, but the low G slips in at the beginning of "Home," and the naughty E is in "A Change in Me" (which isn't on the CD). She's in the upper midrange quite a bit, so make sure you have solid D's and E's. The F's are rare but also need to be solid ("There must be more than this provincial life" and "You're all I've got, no matter what").

^^Just for references.

I'd suggest singing something along the lines of Disney, or if you can find a not so well known Disney song...

Try asking some people on this thread:

They'll most likely give you better suggestions than me.
JIJane gives awesome song suggestions for auditions.

Sing "Somewhere That's Green" from Little Shop of Horrors (sans the Audrey accent and the "squeakiness"). I don't know if they do that song alot in high school, but if I'm not mistaken the two men who wrote Beauty and The Beast's songs wrote Little Shop too.

Yes, that'd be a good song. "Reflection" from Mulan is also a good one. Christina Aguilera sings it.

As others have pointed out, Belle is indeed a mezzo.

My personal favorite song for Belle is Far From the Home I Love from Fiddler on the Roof. But you want a guarantee? Let me tell you something. In theatre there's no such thing as a guarantee. You work, you perserve, you try, and you hope, but there's never a guarantee. My advice is to watch the movie again and again to work on Belle, work on your song, ask your chorus teacher to help you, see if he/she will offer advice and suggestion.

One last thing. High School Casting isn't always about who's best for the role. It's also about chemistry and who can prove themselves. Just because you are a senior doesn't mean some sophmore or freshman won't come along who's a million times better and get Belle. Or maybe you won't get Belle because the other girl has better chemistry with her fellow actors. Maybe it's the only part left that you/she could be casted in. I know a girl, incredible actress and singer, who's done amazing auditions every year, but for some reason or another, someone else fit the role better. If you don't get the part or if you wonder why she gets the role every year, remember this. It may be favoritism, but more likely it's for other reasons. Trust yourself and work on it.

Okay, basically, I'm not asking for that. I just want advice on a good song. I don't care what you have to say about "high school shows". I know my school, and I need a good Belle type song.

And it usually is based on favoritism. The girl who always gets the parts ---- up the shows. She sucks, but everyone thinks shes great.

Edit is a wonderful tool.

If you had read my post carefully, you would have seen plenty of good advice I was trying to offer you to help you with your audition. No need to snap at people.

^ I think you should be a little more grateful! After all people have helped you, they put effort into replying and therefore you should show some more respect. Sorry had to bring that up. Confused

I think Far From The Home I Love...would be really good as someone has already pointed out - it feels very Belle-Esque (if that's even a word)

Good luck.

Sorry not you Converse we must have both clicked at the same time.

numba1kiki - research is all I can say - look around on MDN

numba1kiki: ConverseSneaker is honestly trying to help you, as we all are. That's why we check these boards. You may not care what she has to say, but she's telling the truth. You may think she sucks and there's favourtism, but there is almost always a reason someone gets a part.. maybe she fit those parts better.

You can't sing any song to "guarantee" you the role of Belle. She is a very highly coveted role, and im sure alot of girls will be shooting for it(hey...id transfer just to be able to audtion) Just remeber its all about stage presence and personality. They want someone who they can see Belle in. I would try singing far from home, (FOTR) a change in me, if you can sing from the show, I dreamed a dream, (les Mis...but that depends how overdone you feel that show is) once upon a December,
(Anastasia) Colors of the wind, (Pochahontus), part of your world, (little mermaid)
Hope these helps. Always remember to hold your competition in high regard. If someone else gets the part, they will get it for a reason. Directors aren't as silly as we sometimes think they are. Laughing

When I auditioned for Belle a few years ago, I gave it TONs of thought and decided to sing part of "Just Around the Riverbend" (second verse to the end). It has the same wistfulness, adventure, confusion that Belle has and has a similar range (Riverbend goes from low G to high E)
I ended up not getting Belle, but again, that's just another lesson in casting- you never know how the director sees it in their head or how you fit into that idea, and it's never a sure thing.
DON'T sing Reflection. Probably 10 other girls are going to think it's the "perfect" song.
