Il Muto and the chandelier crashAlthough I'm not as fond of this landmark ALW musical as I used to, please may I ask you a question about the all-important chandelier crash at the end of Act One?
I was reading the synopsis of the show and was curious about the chandelier crash that we see at the end of the first act, when the cast is taking its curtain call for Il Muto. Christine is able to escape because she's taking her own bow. However, nothing happens between All I Ask of You and the chandelier crash, because just as Christine tells Raoul that she must go, it implies that she needs to replace Carlotta. However, we hear Phantom reprising All I Ask of You and cursing everyone for disobeying him. It's as if nothing has really happened, and I don't suppose that we're meant to assume that time has passed when actually no time has passed at all.

Eh?
I assume Christine has finished her performance, and the Phantom is punisihing her for hitting on Raoul instead of him. They intended to escape after her performance, in his carriage ("Order your fine horses..."). Sending the chandelier to the floor is one way of telling her he know about their relationship.
I don't see the plothole here.....?

I see it as a number of different things:
1. That the Phantom's All I Ask of You actually is longer than what we see... he is in some mental anguish and even hears their voices.
2. It's a dumb mistake on the writer's part.
3. Often times, especially back then, opera performers bow at the end of each act...perhaps they were just finishing the act that they were near the end of when the stuff before All I Ask of You begins.

You may actually have a good point....

The way I alwsyas saw it was that even though Christine came bake to play the countess, it was already too late since they had already ignored the Phantom's instructions and let Carlotta play the lead, and further insulted him by forcing Christine to play the pageboy. Whether or not Chrisitne played the countess later is irrelevant. In the Phantom's eyes, they've already disobeyed his instructions, and must be punished as he promised.
