If you could direct any show...What would it be and why?
What would the set be like?
The costumes?
The actors?
Just discuss your dream show to direct as detailed as possible.

I would LOVE to direct Urinetown. I have so many ideas on how this show could be amazing with the right people and right space to do it in. Set would be the pretty well-known Urinetown set, but everything used in scenes like Cladwell's desk, and cashboxes and random things brought on would be onstage the whole time, doubling as something else, or just a part of the scenery. It's easily accessible to the actors and not much time will be used to turn the street into Cladwell's office. The balcony will have a single ladder coming down, and a secret 'stairwell' or something of the sort will house the band.
Costumes will be given new to the actors, and they will destroy and age them themselves. I once aged my costume for a show and it was so fun, and everyones looked great! They can run them over with cars (what me and my friends did) or scratch them up with sandpaper. It's great when everyones clothing looks different, like they've all been through something different.
The cast will be a diverse group of people. Idealy, the Hope would be taller than Bobby. Little Sally will have a girlish look to her, but she'd have some sass, not just a whiney brat. Lockstock would be a handsome guy who can do some sweet dancing during the Cop Song. Caldwell B Cladwell would either be a stocky man, or a really tiny guy, I think both would be hilarious. The ensemble would be small, with only the needed few characters (Becky Two Shoes, Soupy Sou, Robby) plus three or four. All would be strong dancers and numbers like Run, Freedom, Run and Snuff That Girl will have tight dances that are impressive.
...Now I wanna go do this!

It is my dream to direct many things, but most especially "Martin Guerre". I was just about to start a topic about htis actually. The show is not available for licensing (but I'm hoping to figure out how to change that).
I saw the show (the revised 98-99 tour version) three times, twice in the UK, and once in the US. I even remember some choreography! I'm a geek. I really liked what the did with the set, it was almost minimalist. There was one piece that they used in nearly everything. It was a giant table, a bed, a wall- well, many walls, the church... it just magically oncverted into all these things. I would have to have something like that too, and of course some brilliant tech person to figure out how to build one.
I'm not sure if I like the costumes of the ealier version or the revised version better. The revised one is more historically accurate, I *think*, but the earlier ones would be easier (more like puritan america). somewhere in between.
In the American tour version, they changed "The Day has Come" to "Are We Alone" and I didn't like it. I'll stick with the old way.
What I did like in the american tour was that the priest seemed to be caught up in the villagers fervor, as more of an innocent bystander rather than the origin of all their misdeeds. His character had more fluctuations and more depth, rather than just the 'sort of evil priest who thinks he's doing good but really ruining everyone's lives' character.
I remember some of the staging, especially the end, and would have to do it just the same. Arnaud lies dead in Bertrande's arms, as she is sort of kneeling/sitting on the floor, she finishes singing the reprise of "Live with Somebody you Love" . Martin has hung back, behind her, unsure what to do, but wanting to confort her. When she is done singing (as the chorus starts), she reaches one hand out, sort of behind her, searching for him through her tears. He grabs her hand, then comes to kneel beside her and holds her as she cries. You sort of know from that embrace that they will be alright. The scene was so beautiful, I'll never forget it.

Definately CHICAGO....
I have had some ideas for the set.... It would be very simple just a combination of several 3x3 table which can double as many things, A set of steps... for the big musical numbers and doubles as the jury stand, 2 sets of prison bars, a wrot iron bed, a Judge's Stand, and a witness stand.
As for costumes... they would be mostly prison attire which slowly fades to classy robes which can easily be taken on and off for the big musical numbers
As for the dance numbers.... I really like the way the movie did the Tango puppet and finale scenes.... I think for the courtroom circus scene I would have the jury performing the circus (at the command of Roxie(a.K. a. her "dropping" something)) I like the idea of having Velma perform the acts of desperation.....
Staging.... I would use a stage with at least 2 travellers.... the back one would only open in certain ocassions (for those songs that go from ensemble to full cast) to bring in the rest of the cast
That's about all... It's hard to do it without a stage

I am really excited about directing Godspell this year. I love how malleable it is, and I have tonnes of ideas for staging, updating the pop culture references, and so forth.
But the show I'd really love to do would be RENT. I think it would extremely challenging, but I love the storylines and most of the music. It would be very controversial in our town, but it would be worth it in the end. Hopefully the school edition is finished and ready to roll in the next couple of years.

Re: If you could direct any show...The Wiz cause it's such a awesome retelling of the L. Frank Baum story.
The sets would be very fun and somewhat whimmsical as well as the costumes. Somewhat modern, somewhat fantasy
The actors would be whoever I thought were the best people to fit the roles.
It will be a very large Dance show and a lot of interesting touches that I will add for my own personaly flavor

I've wanted to be a director since I was 4 and would love to do Sunday in the Park with George in the Round! It probably wouldn't work, but I think it would be intresting to try do it. Theb only way i can think of doing the painting in it's different stages would be to have the actual actors doubling as the painting (when in George's studio I mean.) While it wouldn't neccisarily be a success, it would be intresting to view and work on.
