If one were to audition for Cats..

There is an audition for Cats coming up at a local university. They requested that we sing 16 bars that "can be from the musical, but is not necessary." In other words, I suppose we're allowed to sing stuff from Cats. I really want to sing 16 bars from "Memory" because it really compliments my voice, but I'm so afraid that it will either typecast me (which I wouldn't mind, I love Grizabella) or work against me due to it's extreme popularity. The only other choice I have is to sing "I Know You" from Sleeping Beauty, but I'd rather sing the latter.

Are there any other reasons not to use "Memory" or reasons that it is a good idea? I'm kinda doing a pro and cons thing. Any comments or advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you very much!

Well, the downside to singing "Memory" is that everyone else is going to do it... it's really overdone (not to be mean, because it's one of my favorite songs!) Maybe you can do the song from Sleeping Beauty or choose another song from CATS (which is hard....because there are few songs that are suited for one person). Whatever you decide to do, I wish you luck with. Break a leg. Mr. Green

Oh no, I completely agree! It is very overdone.. Hmm. Maybe I could take both of the songs, see what others are singing, and then make a decision? Oh dear.

perhaps a section of gus the theatre cat would also be acceptable as it shows good range and control...
however make sure you are completely comfy with your choice and sing your socks off hun!

Generally, I'm told that you shouldn't use songs from the musical from which you are auditioning. Memory is also an all-around bad song choice becasue it's so widely know and everyone has tried to put thier own spin on the song.

I think what's reccomended is trying to find a song from the same of similar composer (ALW shouldn't be that hard) that suits your voice.

This is what actors who have auditioned for national cats productions have mentioned many times on the Cats forum.

I don't know if college auditions are any different.
