Idina... Interesting theory...

In Idina's final ever performance as Elphaba, Helen Dallimore (Glinda) said that Idina wouldnt be playing Elphaba again...

...but she never said anything about Glinda!

Imagine if Idina went back to broadway as Glinda!

In fact, imagine some special day when all the Glindas would play Elphaba and vice versa...

...Kristin Chenoweth as Elphaba...
...Julia Murney as Glinda...
...Megan Hilty as Elphaba...

...but...

...Kate Reinders as Elphaba! Oh my GOD can you imagine that? "The wizurrrrrrrrd and Iiii!! Haaa! Woo!! Bouncy! Bouncy!"
Monsieur D'Arque

Well, now that Idina's retired from the part, it leaves a window open for Alanis Morissette to play Elphaba in the much-speculated movie musical, if it happens. And as we all know, Cheno agreed to return to the role if she could play alongside Morissette.

Alanis Morrisette? Think Eh?
I'm a big fan - I love her music. But I don't think she could sing Elphaba - I think she might be able to act it, but sing it...
Brother Marvin Hinten, S.

She could act it. She looks it. And many people cringe when I say lower the keys, but if she can sing it, act it, and look it, and keys are the only thing holding her back, I don't think it's a big crime to lower it for that person in any situation, much less Alanis Morrisette in a movie of "Wicked."

Sorry but Idina? As Glinda? I don't think so. She doesn't have the voice type at all, not to mention she lacks the vocal maturity needed for "No One Mourns the Wicked". I really think the only part she could pull of with her "scream as loud as I can" voice is Elphie.

You know, I really doubt Helen Dallimore nor Idina herself know the circumstances when Idina would be playing Elphaba. I mean, just because you say you're never going to play a role again.... situations change. While she's probably not going to come and do a run on Broadway again, she may perform the role for a special benefit/tribute/concert, ect.

Also, she probably said she wouldn't be playing Elphaba again on stage. Who said anything about the movie?
Bshaffer22

I really think Idina Menzel as Elphaba really made Wicked one of the best shows of all time her voice is outstanding she's the only one that could belt that last part of Defying Gravity with such power and pose. It's breath-taking I'd love to see her to do again.

As for Glinda her voice doesn't fit that semi-preppy tone. Idina BRONZY voice

No.

That would be the worst thing in theatre since the show itself.

Mungo, EVERYTHING you say tonight has been seriously making me giggle.

And I must say.. Alanis as Elphaba.. could possibly cause me to lose all respect for her.

And a movie version of wicked.. could possibly make me kill myself.

Eden Espinosa. Shoshana Bean. Stephanie J. Block. Saycon Sengbloh. Kristy Cates. Victoria Matlock. Coleen Sexton. Ana Gasteyer. Julia Murney. Dee Roscioli. Carmen Cusack. Jennifer DiNoia. Kerry Ellis. Shona White.

All these women - and I'm sure I'm forgetting someone - have played Elphaba at some point and each of them are fantastic in their own way. I'm not entirely sure Jennifer DiNoia has gone on yet, but she's obviously at least rehearsed it. Sure, some people don't like Shoshana Bean's riffs and sure, some people find Kristy Cates bland and sure, some people don't especially like Elphaba with a British accent. But they've done it.

There's more to Elphaba than Idina Menzel.

I agree even though im like a massive Idina fan! alot of others can pull it off and make it good. Such as Kerry Ellis. (stunning!)

Exactly. It's such a shame that everyone is like
'Idina is the greatest thing since sliced bread!'

Don't get me wrong : she can sing all right! To echo you Baker, there is more to Elphaba than Menzal.

I don't think they would need to transpose the songs for Alanis; she has a pretty high belt- i don't think it would be a problem at all for her to reach those notes. I haven't heard the rumour, but I imagine her vocal style has something to do with the speculation.

Why are they making a film :@ It's gonna be awful! In the grimmerie it said they couldn't make it into a film because it lacked something. Demi Moore had the rights and they worked on it for three years and left it.

They arent! It's just fans speculating.

I really don't think that Idina should play Glinda. That would just be really weird. I would love for the originals to be in a movie production of Wicked but would they have teens play them when in school? Not that either of them are that old but they really don't look like they're still going to school.
superdave

I might be in the minority, but I would be excited to see Alanis in the Wicked Movie (if there will be one) If Alanis is in the movie, Kristin Chenoweth will be in it--which will bring people in, Burton directs it, which probably means Depp will have a role--Depp could play the Wizard, sounds like a summer hit to me. This is all in my mind how it will go down--not any concrete facts here.
brown_eyed_actress

it would be strange, i think, to see anyone but Cheno and Menzel as the title characters. I know Shoshana and Megan and the others are great, if not better than these 2; but because they were the pioneers of Wicked, it only seems right that they would play Glinda and Elphie, right?

Um, well... no...

You just said others are great. What makes it just "right" that only Idina and Kristin should play the parts? Just because they originated it? Well, if we're going by that, then Stephanie J. Block was the first to read for Elphaba, so wouldn't it be "more right" for her to play it?

It just doesn't make sense. There are plenty of awesome women who are great at these roles that there's no reason to deem it "right" that Idina and Kristin should play them and no one else.

Plenty of other shows change too. In fact, nearly all shows change. Celia Keenan-Bolger originated the role of Olive Ostrovsky in Spelling Bee, so is it only "right" if she plays the part? Or does it for some reason only apply to Idina and Kristin?
katethegreat

From a purely commercial perspective, I think that Idina would be the right person to take the role in a film of the musical. She may not be the best, but I can't comment on any of the other people you mentioned. The majority of people in the UK had never heard of Chenowith before Wicked, and most will only know her voice on the OBCR. Menzel had some previous exposure in the movie of Rent and came over here to reprise the role. All the other names you mentioned are complete unknowns outside of the States, and the likelihood is, we won't get to experience them on stage as we did with Menzel.
They'll want to sell the movie, and as always the person who puts the most bums on seats will win the role.

Johnny DEPP? As the WIZARD????

I am scared. Very scared.

In theory, that could work but it's VERY frightening from a Pirates of the Carribean Johnny Depp fan (I'm not crazy about Tim Burton so I don't watch his other work too often).

I wasn't aware that the conversation had been entirely switched to the topic of a movie, since it was never specificied in brown_eye_actress's post... Commercially, yes, Idina and Kristin may be the best for the roles, but we also need to think about the fact that these are college students in the first act. Currently, Kristin is 38 and Idina is 35... not to mention by the time a movie could be planned out, written, cast, designed, and filming began they could be 39 and 36, or even nearing 40 and 37 depending on how long it took. True they look young, but fooling an audience into believing someone is younger than they are doesn't usually work as well on film than on stage.

is alanis actually in consideration for elphie in the movie or did that "rumor" just originate in this forum?

It originated on another forum.
Monsieur D'Arque

As far as this mythical movie musical, how would you feel about Mandy Patinkin as the Wizard?
Mistress

Alanis as Elphaba...hmmmm...it's definite possibilty for me...probably because I'm Canadian and I feel that we could use a Canadian Elphie...and I woldn't mind movie of the musical either...Cheno would still be cjoice for Glinda, as an adult at least. She's got enough credits for it so, it should work...as for Johnny as the Wizard... Confused I think we'd need someone older...lke Peter O'toole. or Goerge Hearn, since he can sing (he did a crazy ass Sweeney Todd and he did play the wizard at one point) but ya I agree that teens would have to be cast for the Shiz parts, to be realistic...

this is off topic but i was wondering if anyone here could verify or debunk this horrible rumour I heard about Idina and Kristin having a falling out after Idina's tony win? I know it's shameless gossip but some people seemed fairly certain of it...but I hope to God it's not true!

And another idea...Kendra Kassebaum as Elphaba... Shocked nevemind. let's not go there.

Anywho, just my opinion, no harm ment!
SapphireNight

Peter O'Toole would make a pretty good Wizard, I think. He can look so caring and fatherly, and then look pretty sinister.
And I dont know about any truth behind that rumour youve heard. I've heard of that before, and I havent heard or seen anything to prove or disprove it. Its just a rumer, but something like that, I respect their privacy. Like you said, I think it is just shameless gossip.

Kendra for Elphie, now that would be interesting. But on a connected point, there's an interview with Megan where she said that everyone thought she'd go in for the part of Elphaba (because it suited her personality wise), but then supprised everyone being Glinda. It was a taped interview for MeganHiltyOnline, I believe, but you'll also find it on youtube.
Sweeney Hyde

^^As for the wizard, I think the obvious choices are the first two men who played them. I mean, come one! Joel Grey...the Cabaret Emcee...I think he could be pretty sinister. Wink Who could be better except perhaps George Hearn! I mean the man embodied sinister in Sweeney Todd and sunset BLVD. But then he has the caring nature as we saw in his Meet Me in St. Louis and La Cage aux Folles. I think not putting Grey or Hearn in as the Wizard would be a crime...
Baker

Hearn was widely considered as being awful as the Wizard. Salome will beg to differ - personally, I think there are worse... but I also think that there are better.
