I was just cast as...Rapunzel.
I'm a bit worried about all the screaming. I'm also not much of an actress so I'm REALLY worried about how to play the part without being annyoing.
I could use any pointers you could take time to give me. Links to youtube clips of performances where you might have enjoyed RAPPY instead of find her annoying?
HELP!!!

if you aremt much of an actress why did you try out for a play??
Sondheim especially requires wonderful actors above all else.
My suggestion is get an acting coach and have him work with you.

WOW! Such a kind comment.
I tried out for a MUSICAL.
I'm a singer and I have been in five productions. My weakest link is my acting ability, I haven't had a lot of acting experience, but my vocals are strong.
The reason I'm worried about this part isn't because I CAN'T do it, but because I feel that Rapunzel is a character that can be taken as a great addition to the cast or an annoying addition.
I felt my nautural personailty and acting ability lies more in a role with less humor perhaps.
Anyhow, thanks for your completely rude and unhelpful comment, (at least in my opinion).
By the way, I've taken acting lessons, as many as I can find in my small town. I do wish to improve. I was looking for examples of the way others felt the role is played best.

I dont mean to be rude but in a musical acting always comes first.you cant get by being a great singer and a mediocre actor.
you are the one who said you arent much of an actress. and in theatre you NEED to be.
I'm just being honesty. and I thought the advbice of finding an acting coach to be appropriate. after all we cant coach you on line.sorry if my honesty came off as rude.

Salome's really right, in musical theatre acting is just as important as singing, if not more so.
Congrats on the part though! As a fellow future Rapunzel, I also have my worries about the screaming. I believe the best way to do it is to use your diaphragm as if it were a high note, right? If I'm wrong someone please correct me!
As for acting tips...thats really something you've got to do on your own. Make your own Rapunzel. I can tell you that there are some wonderful books out there that are of the "fractured fairy tale" genre that give a lot of different perspectives of the damsel. Some titles I can remember off the top of my head- "Golden", "Zel" and "The Tower Room". All are great books, and I'm sure they can be found on Amazon.

A musical is a play. More specifically, it's a musical play.

It wasn't rude. It was completely true. If you don't think you can act, theatre isn't the place to be, even if you can sing. Imagine a role like Little Red, but the director only cast the girl because she can sing. She puts no emotion into it at all, even if she hits the notes. Not a good idea. Theatre = acting. Everyone knows that.

Earlier, we said to watch the DVD of the Broadway Cast. Did you? The entire cast was flawless, and I suggest that you watch it ASAP. Granted, it only displays one way of playing the character. But the Rapunzel (her name escapes me at the moment) was fantastic because she could act. Of course, the singing helped immensely, but without her acting skills her role would have been nothing. If you don't think you can act the part, you should honestly reconsider this altogether. I'm not being rude, I'm telling the truth- if you're not a good actress, theatre is not your field to be in.
Just sayin'. I tried to make it sound nice, because I don't want to come off as rude.

oh, salome is capable of being much meaner should she choose to be.
she was definitely correct here, though, as she usually is. acting is very important to all aspects of theatre, whether it be plays, musicals, operas, ballets, or even a showcase or dance recital.
the screaming is definitely something you should talk about with your voice teacher, i'm sure she/he can help you do it without hurting yourself.
as far as everything else is concerned, an acting coach would definitely help you find a good balance for your character, especially if you feel acting is not your forte when it comes to your performance skills.
like mentioned above, the OBC is a spectacular production, the cast is amazing. however, you should try to see what you can make of the character before you go and totally copy off of somebody else's interpretation.
have fun, though, ITW is a fantastic show and rapunzel is a role you can definitely have fun with.
