I think we have lost another Jellicle!

Hi

I was typing the names of the actors from the UK tour No 2 into Google to find the ones I need autographs for. And got an unwelcome hit.

There is an Emma Priest who had died in 2002 from cancer aged 29 who had left behind a 2 year old daughter Imogen.

Emma was considered one of the brighest stars of musical theatre.

There is now the Emma Priest Scholarship awared at the Sylvia Young Scool of musical theatre, where Emma trained.

Is this she the same Emma Priest who was Jennyanydots in the UK tour No 2 in 1994? Embarassed

I don't think so. Emma Priest is a fairly common name, and I'm sure her obituary would be available somewhere--like a fansite--if it had been the actress. That's very sad, though.

Hi

I thought under Equity union rules there can only be one actor with the same name.

There is only one Elaine Paige and only one Gerorge Cloony.

...um, sure, but this isn't a facist regime. Anybody can have a name. Just because there's an actress named Elaine Paige doesn't mean there can't also be a florist, an engineer, and a plumber with the same name.

I should think it probably is the same woman... Sad How tragic to die so young! She'd have been 21 in 1994? Very likely she could have been the Jennyanydots. If anyone has her biog from the UK Tour, where did she train?

Kragey, we have a performer by the name of Emma Priest in Cats, and a performer by the name of Emma Priest in the obituary. Unless she was performing in Cats as "Emma S. Priest" (or something) then it's the same equity name. Yes, there's probably dozens of Emma Priests in the phone book, but not in Equity.

That seems like a stupid rule to me. What if they want to use their real name and someone else has it as well?

Then they have to change their name. It has always been the same. I new someone called "jane wilson", who changed her name to "jane ash" because there was a beauty queen with an equity card called "jane wilson".

The point is that it's meant to clear up this kind of confusion - there's only one performer out there with the name. If you see an advert for "John Partridge in Concert", it's gonna be him off the video, not John Shane Partridge from Scunthorpe!

It is getting harder tho, as there are so many, many people who are members of Equity. That's why you see so many performers whose surnames are first names, like Craig Scott... Or you never see "Andrew Varley", always "Drew Varley". And you don't see "Susan Tanner", she's always "Susan Jane Tanner" because "Susan Tanner" is someone else!

My point is that "performer" can mean any number of things. It can be a musical theater actress, sure, but it can also be somebody who covers themselves in food and dances in the streets.

(I'm not trying to be rude, I promise.)

BUt some do use different names. I'm pretty sure Becca Parker as Bombalurina in London is the same person as Rebecca Parker as Cassandra. Same with Geoff Garret and Joann Gibb.

Hi

Re two actors with the same name

I sent of for the autograph of a Humburg Teazer called Victoria Maxwell, now living in Canada.

I got the reply to day and its the wrong lady, I thought because the lady I wrote to had released a DVD, it had to be the same lady, wrong.

Better luck next time. Embarassed

yes it is the same Emma Priest who passed away many years ago.
She was a wonderful Gumbie Cat in Bristol 1993 and I read of her passing some years ago in the Stage as Sylvia Young wrote an obit for her. She was simply Fab!
Sorry for the late reply, I rarely have time to post these days!
