I think there was ANOTHER twist?!?!?

I was talking with my friends about Sweeney Todd, and as we had our general discussion on its fantastic/great/amazing-ness one of them mentioned that she heard anthony called the 'old lady' Mum!

I then thought back to the film, knowing that i didnt have a good memory realised that there was a slight chance that i heard this too!

If this is the case wouldn't that mean he was actually trying to run away with his step sister and marry her.

I dont remember the judge and barker's wife actually having sex but i do know he did want to sleep with her at that party!!

Can anyone shed some light on this? We've been arguing since the day the fiilm was released

Uhh... no. The Beggar Woman is not Anthony's mother. There is no indication. The useage of the word "mum" was merely a respectful address.

Also, that would make Anthony Hope fifteen years old. Anthony Hope is not fifteen years old. He is in his twenties or thirties.

Oh my word.

Okay.

Um.

No.

Secondly...the Judge does, in fact rape Lucy.

Thirdly...gosh...

Does not 'mum', as used by both Antony and Toby in Sweeney come from the abbreviation 'ma'am', short for madam?

Okay ... YOU need to relax. Ever heard of the word speculation!
You sound like you wrote the play and now you're very upset that it has been misinterpreted.

It was just a question. Thank you to the others for clearing that one up.

Don't think i'll be posting in this deadout forum ever again.

Don't worry about the people on here. For us, things like that are considered obvious...Even I got it without any hints...I just always assumed that "mum" or "mother" (That's what Anthony uses in the revival) were just ways of addressing strange women kindly.

And Lovett, in "Poor Thing" is just shy of flat out saying the Judge raped Lucy...everything basically comes from the images...people watching, the Judge not being "contrite" etc...and in the Lansbury/Hearn movie (in other words the original production) the scene is actually recreated and we see the Judge raping Lucy..albeit it's censored by his robe...

Thank God! Someone who knows their language!

(Sorry for the random, out of place post. I've just gotten really sick of everyone telling me that in the movie Toby is calling Mrs. Lovett 'mum' as in mother. ~_~)
Pannic

The subtitles on the George Hearn dvd say "ma'am" when Toby addresses Lovett.

Hahaha I was JUST gonna say that! "Mum" is infact "Ma'am"...
theonetowatch

Don't feel bad. I used to think Toby was Lovett's son because he always called her 'mum.' Granted I was like ten and had only heard the recording.

IAWTC. I'm glad you had a theory, but honestly, just because people prove it's impossible doesn't mean you have to have a hemorrage.

IAWTC?

I Agree With The...Chen...?

I agree with this comment Wink

*sigh* Sad oh the horrible memories of being slammed as a fangirl on the Les Mis forum...that was partially my fault, though, for posting my first message less than a minute after finishing the TAC video...I was still very emotional about it and everything came out like a squeeling fangirl. But, still, speaking from experience, don't shoot the newbies...it's not a very good "hello" to the forums if you know what I mean.
Flitterbug

Actually... that's sort of why I only posted here with that comment earlier in this thread. Fear of getting shot.

Since I'm a definate newbie to this fandom, have only seen the movie, and (despite wanting to know more) am not very knowledgeable at all. I figured all of the above would discount me somwhat and possibly cause lowered opinions...
mastachen

Telling somebody that their theory is wrong is not shooting or bashing them. If anything, we're helping the newbies by helping them understand the show better! So why she chose to act all offended and dramatic is beyond me. If I go into the Les Mis forum and argue that Valjean is Cosette's father because she calls him "papa" and when someone tells me otherwise, I'm not gonna get angry, leave, and never come back. This person is being dramatic for the sake of drama.

And I don't see anything wrong with Pannic's post... if I were her, I would've quoted Sweeney Hyde... lol

especially since the "speculation" is proven impossible in the show, whereas things could be misconstrued (sp?) by just watching the movie
Mistress

Yes, but you cold have still said a little more nicely. Some of the replies were a little on the mean side...and others were really nicely put. I mean my initial reaction was closer to the more bemused and annoyed/exasperated of the responses, but I wouldn't post like that simply for the sake of letting a newbie know the idiocy of her questions...maybe it comes from having once been in the same postion, but I'd rather help her into enlightenment, and watch her become a real Sweeney fangirl and move away from being a simple Bleeder...
Kragey

I would have been much kinder with my reply if the "OMG this forum sucks" crap hadn't popped up. At the risk of sounding rude, it's just the internet, so you can't have such a thin skin about things.

But I am a little sorry for being nasty. Only a little, though.
