I Need a Little Bit of Help

For my culminating assignment in speech class, I decided to do my persuasive speech on why people sould watch/listen to musicals. I'm curently trying to compiles DVD's and CD's to show to my class to prove that the authentic, original Broadway is better than any movie interpretation. I would like your opinions on this. For sure I'm using the POTO film and my OCC and Sweeney Todd. My first question is should I compare the film to my Revival cast recording, or look for the Hearn film in my library? (They don't have the OBC in the system for some reason-I checked) My second question is just for some other ideas for cast recording and/or movies to show clips from, as well as what clips to show of POTO and Sweeney. For POTO, I'm probably just gonna compare the candenzas in the title song, but I'm still not sure what to use for Sweeney, but I think I might use it to focus on song and scene cuts (how film interpretations often cut out the best songs and scenes). Can you guys help me? Oh and this is for a a group of teenage girls with (for teh most part) untrained ears who are mostly unfamiliar with original Broadway and much better aquainted with film versions.

There\'s a very good video of the OBC of Sweeney Todd floating around the internet. Find that and compare it to the movie.
Salome

dont use the terrible revival recording. use the Hearn /Lansbury DVD.

I'd also use Man of LaMancha ,Mame and A Little night Music as an example and also recent ones like Hairspray.

It sounds good, I'll see what I can find...should I use Worst Pies in London and compare HBC and Lansbury..or LuPone.?..I'm still considering using my Revival CD since I laready have it, and these kids aren't really going to be analyzing diction or whatnot, they just need to see the rather obvious difference between the quality of the vocals and song cuts-maybe I can show them what they've been missing with Kiss Me?-Mea Culpa would probably be in poor taste in this situation Laughing .

Actually, I already showed them a teeney bit of A Little Priest from the Hearn film in another speech backmin November

LANSBURY!

LupOne sucks. she was far worse than Helena.Helena did a great job with the interpretaion Burton gave the film. luPone was a wreck

Maybe you could use a film with alot of the original cast (Rent or the Producers) and talk about how sometimes films don't do stunt casting and they use the real, genuine, talent. (even though The Producers had Uma and Will....though I think both did a teriffic job).
Mistress

Okay Okay...*sigh* I do suppose you're right, but I'm still a little frightened about the girls and responding well to Lansbury..i.e. thinking she sounds funny or something...or sounds too much like Mrs. Potts..I dpn't want to them to stereotype her because of BatB
Brock07

Mrs. Lovett doesn't sound like Mrs. Potts.

Mrs. Potts sounds like Mrs. Lovett.

Ferrell did a great job..Thurman was dreadful!

Lansbury > Lupone > Bonham Carter

While Lupone certainly did a better job than Helena, I would never use her performance in the revival as a means to sway people to see Broadway shows if you know what I mean. Razz

They don't necessarily know that...to them Mrs. Potts came first.

Mrs. Lovetts from best to worst:

Angela Lansbury
Beth Fowler
Dorothy Loudon
Henlena B. Carter
Christine baranski
Patti LuPone

You\'re on crack.
Salome

you seriously have no concept of who mrs. lovett is.

or for that matter how limited an actress LuPone is.

I have to agree with Dawn. Lansbury was LEAGUES ahead of LuPone as Lovett.

I can just see how LuPone analysed Lovett when she received the part. "Hmmm ... I see Mrs Lovett is the villain of the piece but how will I convey that message to the audience? I know! Let's play her dark from start to finish with no hidden characteristics or changes in emotion!"

Also, her diction is shit.

Helena Bonham Carter was a close second to Lansbury.

Why is Baranski so low? I thought she was awesome. I've heard Maria Friedman as Mrs. Lovett, and I think she should be somewhere on the list above Patti. And Judy Kaye above Patti also.
Salome

I havent seen or heard Judy Kaye but I adore her in everything. I am NOT a maria Friedman fan..but I didnt know she ever played lovett.

Baranski was good..but a bit too cold and calculating. I adore her and liked her lovett..I just didnt love it. (excuse the pun).
JIJane

I agree with Salome. Also on the Uma Thurman in The Producers film comment. By the way Salome, did you see Elaine Paige as Mrs Lovett who did it in NYC recently? I wonder what she was like...
actor

Elaine Paige as Mrs Lovett?!?!

Kill me now!
Salome

no i didnt but I cant stand paige in anything. Elaine Paige is on my 5 most hated musical theatre stars list along with Cheno,Linda Eder, Maria Friedman and Ellen Foley.

You'd have to agree with Dawn if she went Charles Manson on us. Razz
