I'm so dense - please help me!

I've hit a blank - and I know I'm in the best place to ask for help here!

One of my students has texted me and told me that for a school thing (she goes to Italia Conti) she needs a song in the style of Chicago, but not from Chicago...
I'm feeling really dense today (tonight, this morning, whatever) and I'm drawing a blank. Was thinking of a few things from Sweet Charity or Caberet (but she's really not up to something like Maybe This Time) but now I'm thinking they're wrong!
Ugh. Brain addled. Another student from the same place has just texted me telling me she needs 15 new songs for easter, that she knows well...I don't think I even have 15 hours with here between now and then! Shocked d'oh!
Note to self - check future students aren't all on same course....I'm expecting a text from the third anytime soon!
Chevstriss

look at some stuff from Grand Hotel, the Rink, Lucille's songs from No No Nanette.

Thankyou! Mr. Green
Da_Dark_Dude

if u got it - flaunt it from the producers maybe?
or tits and ass?
MrsJamieWellerstein

^I don't know if those two are jazzy enough. And if she's not up to "Maybe This Time", I doubt she can pull of "If You Got it, Flaunt it".

"Charity" was a nice idea, but it's too sweet, lyrically, to be compared to "Chicago", with the exception of the second verse of "Baby, Dream Your Dream".

My thoughts: go with what Chevstriss said.

What about something from Little Shop of Horrors?
Da_Dark_Dude

theres a song in me and my girl that lady jacky sings its very vamp.. u could also mayb check that out, its not overly jazzy from memory though...

Think of the poor teachers! Shocked I have 3 students from Conti all on the same course - they'll all have the same. Thats 45 songs for me Anxious Shocked

Thanks everybody, I'm just sitting here listening to your suggestions. I am curled up in a blanket though - it is sunday after all! Mr. Green

How about something from Thoroughly Modern Millie? It's the same time era so a lot of the songs have the same sound to them as Chicago's songs.

Not for the Life of Me
How the Other Half Lives
Long as I'm Here with You (I think this one is almost like "When You're Good to Mama")
Gimme Gimme
Forget about the Boy
I Turned the Corner

'Blow Gabriel, Blow' from Guys and Dolls comes to mind.

Sorry, "Blow, Gabriel, Blow" is from Anything Goes. It's a good song for these circumstances though. Also you could try "I Get A Kick Out Of You" from Anything Goes. I always link the characters of Reno from Anything Goes to Velma from Chicago. Don't ask me why.

Also, try looking through the score of City Of Angels. That definitely has a lot of jazz. Also, another piece that has a lot of jazz and swing peices is the musical revue Swing. Out of all the songs on it, the best solos are "I'll Be Seeing You" and "Cry Me A River."

For the 15 Conti songs, do they need a particular style?

How about 'You Gotta Get a Gimmick' from Gypsy? Or check out Lionel Barts 'Blitz!' it's not extremely well known, but has some great jazzy numbers.

How about Bye Bye Blackbird from Fosse or I got ya from Liza with a Z... infact anything from the Fosse Album that isn't instrumental.
christinadaae

Fosse is a good place to look.
Maybe Life is A Bowl Full of Cherries.

But Thoroughly Modern Millie is too... sweet.
Except for Only in New York
or Long As I'm Here With You.
katethegreat

Been looking at Fosse actually - brought up Cherries and Blackbird and she didn't like them! Ah well, maybe she'll have to!
I'm pretty sure the 15 songs will have to be musical theatre...would be easier if they weren't Razz
Eponine93

What style of musicals? Or do you just need songs that aren't overdone?
katethegreat

Not totally sure - need to quiz her more! I don't think they'll mind a few well known songs - it is just for school right now.
