I'm Screwed

For no reason what so ever, my throat is sore and my voice is likely to die out on me. And I have an audition on MONDAY.

I've been drinking lots and lots of water and sucking cough drops like mad. What other cures are there to help prevent voice loss and get the soreness to go away?
Eponine_Thénardier_08

What helped me was drinking lots of lemon water instead of plain water, not talking at all and drinking tea with lemon in it.

I hope everything works out okay and break a leg at your auditions.

Make tea your new best friend

steam also helps.
Elphaba22

put a humidifier in your room.

Dearest Shoe,

Voice rest. It's difficult, but it's hugely helpful. Also, stay away from dairy products and caffeine of all kinds, don't clear your throat, and water, water, water!!
TheatreLuvr4Life

All of the above, plus try some pineapple juice. Works wonders for me, but don't have too much because of acid reflux or something of the sort.

Very Happy

Oh, boy, am I in the same boat as you. I have an audition (CRUCIAL AUDITION, might I add) in 9 days and starting yesterday my throat has been hurting and my tongue is turning white. I'm terrified that it is strep throat. Either way, I do know of one cure; it's disgusting but it works. Mix equal parts vinegar and honey and then-down the hatch! Once a day until your symptoms are gone. Apparantly it's some kind of deep South remedy. Yay for the deep south!

And yeah if anyone has some tips to quickly get rid of what may be the beginning of strep throat, please give give give!!! Laughing

I'm in Texas and you can't get any deeper than that so Yay for the south but I have never heard of that one. Now we do use honey and whiskey and that also works.

All this plus SLEEP. Sleep does wonders. When you sleep your body heals itself.

I already have one.

Thank you guys so much! Hopefully, my voice will be better by Monday, but if it's not, I may skip and pray I get into the other show.
MusicalGal1194

Good luck! Feel free to keep me/us posted! I'm rooting for you...we're in the same situation!
sunrae

I echo what everyone else has said.

Also throat coat tea is really good. The slippery elm is the key ingredient there.

And be careful of sucking on too many cough drops. The sugar in them isn't so great for you. Plus if they are the kind that numb your throat that's not good becuasse then you'll talk or whatever and feel fine when you're actually doing more damage.

Hope you get your voice back for your audition!!

I have a question!!!!!!!!

I have a severe urge to have pizza and incidently there is a box of fantastic tasting pizza ready to be cooked. But would the cheese(being a dairy product) be bad for my voice and hurt it futher?
MusicalGal1194

RESIST THE SAVORY TEMPTATION OF PIZZA! I too gave in to the temptation of the *shudder* whipped cream and it only messed me up more. Resist.....resist!!!!
ConverseSneaker

BLOODY *%^&#*@*@*^&@*!)^!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, that is not an actual word, that was just my frustation being pounded out.
MusicalGal1194

So sorry. But the dairy will do you no good. Which sucks, 'cause all I really want right now is some ice cream. But nay! I can't. Because it messes up the mucus in your throat even more. Unfortunately for you, there is really no subsititute for pizza without cheese, so.....soup? That will soothe your throat.

Gahh. Now you've made me want pizza!

Resistance shall be our mantra!

I forgot to mention that the most important thing you can is rest your voice as much as possible until the morning of your audition then do some vocal excersises.
MusicalGal1194

Ah, Shoe! I have just heard of a slightly disgusting yet plausible cure for the throat-issue we've got going on. I read online that a good way to help speed up your cure is to, every night before bed, gargle a solution of equal parts water and hydrogen peroxide. It's supposed to kill the bacteria in the post nasal drip that causes a sore throat. I'm going to try it tonight and keep ya posted.

Resist the Cheese!

:-& I've heard of salt water but that.....

I'm being a good girl, I'm resisting. The real test will be the cake, soda and ice cream for my sister's birthday this week anyways. Crying or Very sad
MusicalGal1194

Hmmm today I tried gargling in the morning with warm water that I mixed salt and lemon juice into. I put a fat lot of lemon juice in there, and it worked splendidly. It certainly nipped my post nasal drip in the bud. Try it!
ConverseSneaker

Once I've determined if we even own lemon juice, I shall!
Tenalto

I gargle with Listerine when my throat is sore; I figure if it's supposed to kill germs and things in the mouth, why not in the throat as well? It works fairly well, actually. Also, I agree with whoever said to sleep. I've been sick as a dog for a week and a half -- phlegmy, congested, sore throated, and coughing like a consumptive nineteenth-century whore. I took two naps amounting to around three-and-half hours on Wednesday, then got a decent amount of sleep that night. The next day I wasn't half as bad, and today I'm even better. Just in time for my audition, too. Sleep on it, rest your voice, gargle with something germ-killing, and you should recover in time. I wish you the best!
ConverseSneaker

I had a dream last night and during my dream, I ate ice cream and then my dreamself said "Oh no, I shouldn't have eaten that!"

Laughing
MusicalGal1194

Hah! That's hilarious! See, you're still being digilant even in your dreams! I gargled with that warm water/salt/lemon juice brew twice yesterday (once before classes and once before bed) and took an ibuprofin and today I woke up and the pain in my throat is gone! Yay! Now it's just a matter of getting things to 100% again-my throat feels a little scratchy/mucus-y and my nose is still stuffy. How're you feeling today, Shoe?
ConverseSneaker

My throat isn't sore anymore at all, I'm just terrified that my singing will be crap at my audition. Because I tend to lose projection ability and high notes at times like these. And my song NEEDS them. GAH!
MusicalGal1194

I know what you mean. I tend to lose my belting power after a cold somewhat. How much longer until your audition?
ConverseSneaker

Monday Evening and then I have another two weeks later as a backup show.
MusicalGal1194

Wow! Monday is a lot sooner than mine. Good luck! Just get a lot of vocal and physical rest this weekend, and no dairy all weekend either. Nope, nada, zip, zilch. It sucks so bad but, hey, the sacrifices we make for our love of musical theater, right?
MusicalGal1194

Good luck tomorrow, Shoe! I wish ya the best! When are they supposed to let you know if/what you've been cast as?
ConverseSneaker

If I'm lucky, I'll know before my next audition. Those people never contact me for over a week at the earliest.

Thanks!
MusicalGal1194

Huzzah! Today is a fated day! Break a leg! And don't you worry about your voice one bit, I'm sure it's fine. Besides, you have your backup audition too! Cool

I know I'm feeling a lot better today; I have no doubt that I'll be 100% by Friday.
ConverseSneaker

UGH!

I'm so bouncy right now....and my voice sounds like gucked up crap to me....So I'm perfectly normal for preaudition me.
MusicalGal1194

How did it gooo?
ConverseSneaker

I sang a verse(not perfect, but ok) and then they had everyone come in, learn a song and learn two dances. This took from 5:30 to 9:30 and there were about 30 people maybe tops.

Then they told us, everbody come back tonight and then we will really audition you. Strange, but interesting. Except the second dance was like REALLY intense so my ankles and legs are pretty sore.
MusicalGal1194

Hmmm try hot/cold compresses and some stretches. Well it sounds like it sure is going to be interesting! Keep me posted!

BTW, i don't think you ever told us/me what show this auddie is for?
ConverseSneaker

My Fair Lady.
MusicalGal1194

oooh very fun! Laughing
MusicalGal1194

SO how'd the callback go? My audition is tomorrow and I'm feeling a bit...phlemy. Blechhy. So we'll see!
ConverseSneaker

Intense. My singing...it bombed big time. Other than that, I think I was pretty good.

So now I have to wait about a week to hear back and my parents have decided that I will not be going to the other audition because of bloody gas prices. Crying or Very sad
MusicalGal1194

Yeah, our stupid economy is not doing so hot. It's a real shame that you won't make it to the BaTB audition because of gas prices, though. But maybe its for the best? Perhaps you'll get this part you got a callback for, and you wouldn't want to do BaTB anyway! Very Happy Think positive!

Have I mentioned how much I love you?
I am hoping for this because I'd kill to play Eliza but knowing my luck with the music director, I'll be doomed to chorus if I even make it in. We'll see though.

Heheh, thanks, I wuv you too! Eliza would be the most amazing role to play, and I know you'd do great as her. But trust me, I've had my fair share of fickle directors, so obviously the best advice would be not to take it personally if you don't make it in or get chorus. Your chances of getting in, though, are pretty high, because you did get a callback after all. He/she must have liked something about you!
ConverseSneaker

Well, no, because the first night they taught us the songs and dances and asked EVERYONE to come back for the second night and then we would do the dance and readings for them.
MusicalGal1194

Oooh right right right. Scratch that! Nevertheless: think positive! When I got my first lead role (Minnie Fay in Hello, Dolly!) I completely didn't see it coming. I was sure I was going to lose out the part to an older, more experienced actress. But low and behold, when the cast list was posted, there was my name. It was the greatest surprise and joy of my life. So who knows? Just keep positive. You know you can do it, I know you can do it, and by God if that director doesn't know you can do it then he/she is completely out of her gourd.
MusicalGal1194

Dude...my audition is today, and my nose is stuffed up the wazoo and my voice sounds ridiculously terrible. IIIIIEEEEEE~!!!!! Crying or Very sad
ConverseSneaker

try the steam treatment!
MusicalGal1194

FROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTCAKKKKKKKKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
So i am so pissed right now. I'm at choir, right, this afternoon, and I seriously feel like I am going to pass out right there. My sinuses hurt, my head feels like a two ton brick, and my throat hurts super bad. I get home, and I have a low grade fever. So I'm NOT going to the audition today, instead i'm going tomorrow afternoon. Pray for me that I get better!!!!
