Hey everyone -
What is this song actually about?!?! I'm supposed to perform it, but I'm not sure I completely understand it.
All I get out of it is that the character's strength is what is seperating her from her children, her father, mother and husband, but she doesn't understand it. Is that right?

Yeah, I've always been confused by this song, but I guess because her parents and everyone she's related to is scared by things, she has to stand strong and not be afraid in order to give them support. I just thought that up now.

That's basically the way I performed it. She has built up these walls around herself all her life and supported others so long, she doesn't know how to drop those walls and let David in and see her weaknesses and faults. She's really just lonely and trying to find a way to relate to the people in her life.

Is there even a story in the musical it's from? I don't know much about it. But that song is BEAUTIFUL. I guess it's basically just that the girl is saying that she's not afraid of anything (duh) and a very strong willed person, and she doesn't understand why people around her are afraid of little things.

Songs For A New World, which is where I'm Not Afraid comes from is more a revue then a musical. There's no story, its just a collection of songs by Jason Robert Brown that even JRB himself has said have no relation to each other.

Oh-okay. Yeah-I know two of the songs, "I'm Not Afraid" and "Mother Mary" which are both beautiful-but I had trouble figuring out how the two would fit together...lol Now I know-they don't!

Mother Mary isn't a song. The song you are probably thinking of is Christmas Lullaby, which is the proper name to that song.
