I'm going to New York City

I'm Going to New York City this summer and I am going to a broadway show for the first time. I am 15 and I will be going with my aunt and cousins who live down in Long Island. I don't want to see Rent, Wicked, Grease or Hairspray because I have seen them all on tour. Which show should I go to?

I just saw Young Frankenstein yesterday and it was flipping AMAZING, so I'd recommend that. I'd also strongly suggest In The Heights and Passing Strange, as those two are garnering some good reviews. If you want a non-musical (and I THINK this is a non-musical), A Catered Affair might be good, but then again I'm a sucker for anything Faith Prince.

Hmm. I wonder why. Wink

Back on topic, of what's currently on Broadway, I've only seen POTO and Spamalot, Spamalot I found very good and quite humorous, POTO=overrated, but not bad.

If you guys like older shows (as in more classic Broadway), the revival of South Pacific is amazing! Highly recommended from me. I just went last week and it was my first show.

Curtains is still in good shape. Catch it before it closes. It's a fun show with a good cast.

Did you see this, Salome? It was pretty poorly acted, but the production values were great...(Costumes and sets)

Laura Linney's shortcomings were many onstage and that was amplified by her costar's performance...and I found that even he was kind of one-note-ish...but he had a LOVELY voice!

If you're coming after July 17th, I would say to check out [title of show]...It's a personal favorite of mine...Though I'm not sure how it will translate, considering the show is now actually ON Broadway...LOL!

I did see it..and although i wasnt impressed with linney (i played it better Wink ) I was shocked she was so bland.
Tourvel wasnt great either.

Ben Daniels and the legendary Sian Phillips were excellent! as was the actress who played Volonges.
I thought the direction was clever and dynamic.

I kinda disagree...I thought many of them were playing charicatures and not the complexities that are so evident in those characters...

I did like some of the staging, though...How the women's dresses were used and whatnot...I especially liked Linney's SLOW overlapping cross just behind the glass as Tourvel was being overtaken...

but honestlyu wasnt Sian Phillips just amzing nuanced. you can't deny it. just a look from her or a grunt.

True...VERY true...the cast really should have followed her example...

I'd recommend In the Heights.

I just got back from NY and it was probably the most consistently enjoyable show I saw. Non stop entertainment, and pretty much everyone in my group was laughing and crying at some point throughout the show. It's pretty relatable, the group I went with ranged from HS Freshman to older white women, and they all really enjoyed it.

Gypsy is also amazing, it was my favorite show that I saw. Young Frankenstein is just alright.

every time i hear something form IN The Heights on Sirius I cringe.. them usic is so rackity.

I dunno. I never heard the music from In the Heights before I saw the show and I haven't listened to it after. But in the context of the show it didn't bother me at all, I liked it, it fit the show.

Yeah...I usually don't like that style of music very often, but in the context of the show, it was really beautiful when it needed to be and really energetic when it needed to be. It was never all one note.

It's so much a part of the culture...I thought it added a TON to the show. It's one of my favorites of the season.

Since we get these types of "I'm going to NY Please recommend me shows" threads, I was wondering if we can just make it into a sticky. In that thread, we can list announcements of new shows on Broadway, categorize shows based on interest, age, actors, etc.

People can also ask general NY questions and share tips on travelling, cheap hotels, shopping, and all that jazz.

Just a suggestion. Smile
