I'm a convert.I finished watching the Lansbury/Hearn DVD today.
I'm absolutely addicted. Totally see what you all were talking about. Sondheim has grown on me so much lately.

What did you think of Betsy Joslyn?

I cannot believe her vibrato. She got shrill, but it was still fine to listen to.

Good for you! My first time was the best. (-Insert sexual humor here-)
Alex: What don't you like about Betsy? My only problem with her is the whack-ass facial expressions she makes during Green Finch...

Did you notice her massive cross-eyedness?
And YAY! I'm always glad when there are new fans of the musical... now the movie is a different story

1. When people cross their eyes to much, it might get stuck that way. Just a thought.
2. She DOES get shrill, worse than Tracy Shayne in Les Mis, and I used to think that's as shrill as a woman (who's not angry) could get.
3. Her acting, to me, seems weird at times. I get the impression that she had trouble determining when to act over-the-top and when to act normally.
4. She says her "Ah sir" during Kiss Me really really weirdly.
5. Her loud gasps are totally distracting, mostly because it's so.. piercing, and she seems to gasp at all the wrong times.
6. whack-ass facial expressions during Green Finch.

As a semi-recent convert, I know how amazing it is to experience Sweeney for the first time! Congratulations on happening upon an amazing musical.

I actually watched the Lansbury/Hearn recording on YouTube two days ago, because I was extremely curious of the musical. I'll have to admit I never really heard about it until they said it was going to be made into a film.
I was surprised, I'm not usually a fan of overly dramatic stuff; I'm used to musicals being mainly amusing and stuff. The songs seem very complicated and very, yeah, dramatic, just more than what I'm used to. Nevertheless I liked it very much, and I can see why someone wanted to put an amazing story like that, and such amazing tracks like the highly impressive "Epiphany" into a movie.
I haven't seen the movie yet, though, so I just wanted to see how it was done on stage, so I can have a bit of a better perspective. Judging by small clips I've seen from the movie it's a completely different atmosphere; but I'll have to form a better opinion when I see it when it's out in Belgium.

I love Betsy's Johanna.
She's the only one I've seen that captures the insane nature of Johanna. IMO, Johanna has some screws loose.
