Agreed! I'm so glad there are people on here who aren't all eww jukebox musical. Because it really isn't. And those people who do complain about it, usually haven't seen it and therefore can't truly appreciate or understand it. | ||

Jukebox Musicals
I can understand people who are skeptical about the form because, let's face it, more often that not these shows rarely are more than an excuse to showcase a selection of popular songs. However, there are times when this kind of show works very well - but it takes a lot of effort to get it there. Jersey Boys and Mamma Mia! both work very well - and they are very different to each other. We Will Rock You, on the other hand, is a mess that truly leans on the pedigree of it's score, as it were. (Of course, many of the "jukebox" shows that simply present themselves as revues work really well, but they are in a category of their own.) I think that one also has to make sure that one's frame of reference shifts to the proper place. If you go into a jukebox musical expecting a "Rodgers and Hammerstein" style musical play, for example, you are doing to be disappointed and you are going to evaluate the show in a way that doesn't necessarily do it justice. You wouldn't judge how good a musical comedy from 1934 (like Anything Goes) is by the same standards you would a musical play from 1951 (like The King and I). Why not? Because although both are musicals, each represents a different form of musical theatre. And it really is as simple as that. Later days David |

ok, so my boyfriend who lived up in upstate New York, grew up with John Lloyd Young.
I screamed when Mr. Young was on TV and my boyfriend, goes, "Oh good for him, I knew he'd make it one day. What a great kid." I died. haha. I love this is so so much. |
