I know this is annoying....Hello all!!
I know it gets annoying when people ask what part to audition for...But I am DESPERATE....
I have never seen Cats before....I know a few of the songs....BUT I want to audition for the show.....Heres the problem...
I can sing and act....But my dance skills are not horrible...I just cant pick up on combinations as quickly as others...Should I even bother to audition??
I am 23.... a very strong Soprano...Athletic build...'
Im usually type cast in roles...Such as Glinda in the Wizard of Oz...or Silly girl in beauty and the beast.... Fun, Prissy parts is what i normally get
Can someone please lead me in the right direction?? Is there a particular part I should set my goal for??
Thank you all so much....

If you don't mind getting older roles, it should be fine. Depending on how they go with it, you might have a shot at Jellylorum. I'd say Jennyanydots too, but she's got a tap solo. Jellylorum does some dancing in most production, but not a lot. If they decide to do a portion called 'Growltiger's Last Stand', Jellylorum then doubles as Griddlebone, who is an operatic diva and must hit some very high notes.
Good luck!

i think you should audition just for the heck of it! what version are you auditioning for?
however i agree with QuaxoCoricopat, Jellylorum is a not too dancey a role and more about the character and story telling, she is an older cat, looks after Gus and most of the kittens, and yes she doubles as Griddlebone however ive also seen productions where the Gumbie also doubles as Griddle so just go for it and good luck! Take a few contrasting songs, jazz shoes and bags of personality!!

I agree. Jellylorum sounds like the best option for you.

I'd agree with Jellylorum too, but since you're soprano and a strong singer, you could audition for Grizabella and she doesn't have much/any dance to do. Hire the video or DVD and you'd get a much better idea of what they'll be looking for. I've read audition articles that say they've had tons of talented singers, dancers and actors audition, but many have been turned down because they didn't show an understanding of the "cat-ness" of the show!! If that made any sense at all...

It depends...do you really enjoy the character roles more than serious ones? I'm a 20 year old girl who's always cast as the silly roles (yep, I did Silly Girl #2 in B&TB), and was just called back for Rumpelteazer in my audition, even though I don't think I'm the best dancer. I was told it's all about expression and personality, so that's a fun one to shoot for if you usually get those kind of roles. Otherwise, here's kind of a breakdown of some others you might want to shoot for:
Jemima: She's little, young-sounding, big innocent eyes, the contemplative one...sings high soprano solo.
Jellylorum: Mature soprano sound. Kind of a storyteller, older cat
Jenny Anydots: Soprano, jolly "Bette Midler" type, tap dances
Rumpelteazer: half of a pair of cat burglars. Spunky and peppy, has some acrobatic stuff like cartwheels with her partner
Demeter or Bombalurina: Kind of the "sexy" cats..they sing a Chicago-like song, and Bomby is always trying to be the center of attention.
That's all the younger ones I can think of...definitely audition, you never know what will happen!

If she's not so great with the dancing, Jemima, Rumple, Deme, and Bomba are out of the question, really (and Deme and Bomba aren't sopranos anyway)...
I'd definately go for Jellylorum. She's a great comical character during Growltiger's Last Stand.

Ahhhh well most people have already told you to go for Jellyorum, and I agree with it. But you may also give Grizabella a shot if you really wanna get noticed! She doesn't dance at all... and she gets to go to the heaviside layer I wish you the best of lucks with the audition!
