I have a choice: Les Mis or A Chorus Line?

Well in the summer I can try out for one of the two shows... And I have no idea which one to choose.

They're both for grades 9-12, and I'll be in 10th grade at the time.
I'm a belting mezzo; I can hit soprano notes but they're not very good IMO.

I don't know which has better character roles for me?
Does anybody have any opinions/suggestions?
The Next Ten Minutes

Les Mis, definitely.

If you like to dance, ACL will be really fun for you.
If your not much of a dancer, or would rather have a show with less dance, go with Les Mis. I love both of them.

you seem to be a stronger singer than dancer. if so, les mis is the show for you, but bear in mind that it will be very popular compared to a chorus line, as IMO it is more well-known

this may be true, but le miz usually calls for a larger cast doesn't it?

well, if you're not including the people who are cut from ACL in the first scene....

DO A CHORUS LINE.

Such a good show.

Agreed.

And plus, if you aren't a really strong dancer, ACL will be harder to get into.

Is there a reason why you can't audition for both?

If it were me I'd go for ACL. Do you mind being in the chorus, or would you rather have a decent size part? Most female parts in ACL I would class as mezzos; if you're a reasonably strong dancer you could play Diana, Val, Bebe, Maggie, Sheila or Judy in ACL, maybe even Cassie if you're really good. In Les Mis you could only really play Fantine, Eponine or I suppose Madame Thenardier.

Also, everyone always talks about how you have to be an amazing dancer for ACL; there's actually only two big dance numbers, and I would think for community theatre or youth groups you only need to be competent. Acting and singing is just as if not more important for almost all the characters. I'd hate to see a production of ACL where dancing was prioritised over everything else and everyone was an amazing dancer but a dire singer/actor. And I doubt they'll find 17 triple threats in that age group, so don't worry too much about the dance, as long as you're reasonably good you'll be ok.

Yeah. Since so many people try out for them and only 25 get in each, you can only try for one.

And thanks everyone for the help! Smile
I'm still undecided as of right now but this is really helping me...

I auditioned and got a callback for ACL once, and although the original dance audition wasn't awful, the dance CALLBACK was SOOoooo intense, and I didn't get into the show.

Oh man. Well, I'm up against the best of the best at my youth theatre, so I guess that the only result in me trying out for ACL is utter humiliation. I'm going for Les Mis then. Thanks so much everyone! I appreciate it.
