I hate my parents!OOOOOOOO I am so annoyed right noW! OK, so, just because i was late for school one day this week (by like 5 minutes) my parents have grounded me from going to my musical theatre group/class this week.
And today my freak dad rang the school and asked them if i was late today and i was so now i'm grounded from it next week too!!
WTF!?!? I think they seem to think i just go ther for a hobby! they don't realise in their dumb thick heads that this is what i want to do as my career!
I used to always be late for school over the last 4 years but only by like a few minutes but now it's only like once a week. I actually hate them and to be honest i never want to look at them again in my life. I am so angry right now i had to prevent myself from writing thousands of swear words in this post.

Well actor I am not a parent. But I do understand that if you want to do what you love youneed to be responsible. I am sure your parents understand that this is what you want to do, but they are trying to tell you that school is important too, showing up late to anything shows a lack of respect and discipline. There is the obviously some exemptions to that. But if you have no reason to be late then be on time. would you ever be late to rehersals?
Holy crap I sound like my father once did.

And to add to this great post...if you are late to a rehearsal on a professional level, oftentimes you are fired. So being on time is a very important lesson to learn.
School will help to teach you the research tools you need for acting...Much of literature and history often tie into the subject matter of plays/musicals...Science, math, etc. can also play a part.

And welcome to the training that will ultimately make you successful in your chosen career. It's called discipline, and if it's that important to you, you'll be on time, won't you?

Maybe you are not getting the answers you want to hear, but we are being honest with you. And believe me, you don't hate your parents, and just wait until you get older, and they get older. Then you will really hate them . Just joking.

I was sick one morning and couldn't get myself out of bed to go to school, so my mother grounded me from everything but school for a week. Mind you, this was approximately one week before tech week for my current show starts, and the director/SM were not happy at all... my parents don't seem to realize that shows are actual commitments. So, three rehearsals down the drain, and they couldn't care less. It sucks, because they've done this before, for equally stupid reasons.

Oh dear actor. I am sorry. However, the advice given so far is right. I know that's not what you want to hear now but, some of us really are old enough and wise enough to know. And some of us are also parents.
I told my parents that I wanted to be a clown, an author and an actor in that order as I grew up. What am I doing now? I'm a police officer. You know what? I'm doing a job I love and I'm earning more PA than 99.99% of actors.
Smiling and saying "Enjoy your meal, sir." is acting but not very fulfilling acting. It is however as much acting as most actors get to do each day.

So don't go to school late Wouldn't that be the sensible thing to do?
Omigosh Gayboy, I wanted to be a circus clown once! And I even wrote that on my little profile thing in High School.. Awww.. Then I realised I'm not that funny

Haha... yeah that's probably the reason a lot of parents get sore when they hear their kid wants to be an actor. Most of them never get their "big break". My parents are always grumbling about how I'm wasting my time doing all this theatre stuff because I'll never make it into an acting school anyway [insert violin smiley]. But I'd much rather be doing something that I like and not make a lot of money than make a lot of money doing something that I don't like.

Don't say you ever say you hate someone for something so simple. Yes, I definately agree, it was pretty bad to get grounded like that and I'm sorry Actor about missing pratice, I know it sucks and I snap at everyone when I miss pratice too, but they aren't going to be there forever and they want you to be alright when they're gone. Trust me on my theory here, I almost lost both my parents. When you see your mother dying, you learn things like this. It hurts to hear people say I hate my parents.
My advice? Buy an alarm clock(no snooze button attached!)

Oh please, that's nothing!
When I was a kid, I would be severely grounded over anything (well, it seemed like 'anything' at the time, hehe).
I was actually barred from seeing Les Mis once because of a couple of "C's" on my report card. Luckily, my grades improved and I was able to see it as it was still playing in L.A. at the time.
Another time, I was lazy and didn't want to memorize my times tables, so I was confined to m y room the entire friggen summer with a set of flash cards and I could only go out for food and bathroom. It took me a few days to memorize them but the lesson lasted me a lifetime...
...DON'T MESS WITH MUM OR DAD AND DON'T BE A LAZY BUM OR ELSE!!!
You'll love them and thank them when you grow up, hehe.

Wow... I refused to memorize my times tables when I was a kid but I think it was because I was mad that my brothers didn't have to do them (my grandmother was under the impression that boys can learn times tables when they're older but girls are slower and therefore need a head start). Well it turns out I did learn them overtime (though I sometimes use the finger trick for the nines).
And BTW, not everyone loves and thanks their parents when they grow up. A lot do, but many have conflicts with parents that aren't just silly kid stuff. I just finished reading "A Child Called 'It'" and I'm guessing that kid isn't thanking his parents anytime soon.

I still don't really know the multiplication tables. I know the twos and most of the threes and select others that actually matter. You'll never need to know what seven times nine is so urgently that you can't use a calculator.
Etoile, it's true that many people don't grow to "love and thank" their parents as adults, but comparing it to "A Child Called It" isn't really on the same level as getting grounded for being habitually late to school.

I had to memorize times tables.
And I still haven't forgotten them.

It's not just about times tables, people, lol!
Yeah, it was nice to memorize them but the discipline is what counted. It's the lessons you learn from that discipline that you later apply in everyday life. My parents wanted to make sure that I wouldn't slack off like that again and the severity of the punishment ensured that. Too many parents are lenient to the point where kids step all over them. The only way to prevent that is by giving out punishments that really hurt.
And of course you won't thank parents if they abuse you or are waaaay harsh. There is a very fine line between being tough and over-doing it. My parents always made sure to explain why they were doing what they were doing - because they loved me. They weren't tyrants. Actually, now I know it hurt them almost as much as it hurt me.

How long are your passing periods. It doesn't seem like it should be that hard to be on time. I mean i've been late plenty times but that was my own fault for talking to my friends during passing period. But if you really don't want to be grounded again or w/e just be on time

I have a beautiful home, amazing car that was given to me, and a college fund sitting away in the bank...all courtesy of my parents. I'm not saying they're buying my love or obedience or anything...but. They do so damn much for me. The least I can do is show up on time to class, learn, get good grades, and show some responsibility. Just my little nugget of info.

Thanks everyone. Wow, I've just read that post back and I'm a little shocked at how angry I actually was lol. Most of the anger has subsided now and of course I don't hate my parents but I'm still a little annoyed.
The reason I'm late for school so much is because I can't get up in the morning. I know that is pure laziness but I love lie-ins but I always over do it and don't leave enough time to get ready. I'm working on it though. However, I dislike school and if I was getting up early to go to a rehearsal or something I definately wouldn't be late.
Thanks again for everyone's posts.

Here's a tip on getting up on time. Get an alarm clock and put it in your bathroom (or otherside of your room then bed. That way when it goes off you have to get up to turn it off. At that point you're up anyway so you might as well get ready for school and not be late, hence not get grounded.

Another tip: Find a station or host you hate.
I used to set my radio to go off during Rush Limbaugh's show. I hated him so much I would HAVE to get up and move around to turn it off.

Indeed, the alarm clock the other side of the room is the best and not an alarm clock that has a repeat. And only ONE alarm clock allowed so if you don't get that alarm, you've blown it. You'll soon learn.
Just as a side note, I've read all of the Dave Pelzer books. To me, especially the first two, they seem a little far fetched. I was physically abused, abused children have my sympathy but some of his tales of woe just don't quite add up for me. My ex who is a nursery nurse and has also read all the books agrees.

Yes, my old alarm clock used to be set to a random channel since the tunning device broke. Evey morning I would wake up to static dogfood comercials, I couldn't wait to turn it off.

So you're using the physical strength and flexibility needed for clowning, plus their acute perception of audience reactions... and you're writing reports in concise, clear language... and you're showing no fear in the face of intimidating, potentially violent youths who could gut you in a second.
Sounds like you've actually achieved all three! |
Arf, I shall have to tell my dad that. He'll probably go "Hurrumph! See those black kids... yadda yadda yadda..."

I agree with all the advice given so far. My only question would be: why are you always late for school, but never late to your theatre group? Right now, school is so much more important than your theatre group. Don't throw your education away in persuit for your dreams, because it's bloody tough to be an actor, and you need a good education to fall back on.

nothing ticks me off more than parents who don't take professional theatre seriously and just decide that "oops, my kid can't make it to the 2 o'clock show, I've got a hair appointment!"
it's happened.

That's an interesting point...I don't know wether or not the books are true, but it didn't really do anything for me like everyone kept telling me it would. It didn't really have a plot, climax, or anything. I know it's supposed to be non-fiction but it just sort of drones on like a really long monologue... I was just using the book as an example in my other post.
