(sound of breaking glass) MAZEL TOV!!
A good start would be to watch Neva Small's very creditable performance of Chava in the movie.

To be honest, when I played Chava I didn't really use the movie version as a template. I thought Neva's portrayal was ok, but not what it could have been.
I read the chapter from the book the show is based on. It gave me great insight as to who Chava "really" was. I strongly recommend reading the book and coming up with your own conclusions as to who you believe she is, however what I got from it is that she is strong, mature (some directors say she is the most mature of the daughters), intelligent and she enjoys having intellectual conversations and isn't afraid to challenge her father, or anyone else.
While this role can be emmotionally draining, it is one of the best to play. Have fun with it!

Wow, good luck - one of my dream roles. Keep us posted on how the show is going.
By the way, I might be auditioning for the role myself next year - not expecting to get it though, my dancing is rubbish!

I just played Chava back in May. I approached her like she was a quiet girl in front of her parents who always obayed. She liked to tease her older sisters and was good friends with their husbands (Motel and Perchik). She finally loses her "good girl" stats when she falls in love and marries with Fyedka (thanks to Motel, for she was watching his shop when they met). She does a brave thing by going back to Tevye and when he tells he "No" she screams and cries. Then she becomes brave when she goes back to see her family with Fyedka (Our Fyedka held my hand when we went back, as a sign of support...his idea but it looked really like he was supporting me on film. oh and yes, I am still friends with my Fyedka (he's playing Doody in my production of Grease and he is one of my only friends in the cast.).
But yea. She's a good girl who always listens to her parents and then she listens to her heart and falls in love.

My sister is playing this.
My advice would be, play a sweet, gentle, but very passionate(when called for)girl. Chava is very quiet, but in certain scenes, especcially the Chavellah dance and the dialogue after, just let it ALL out. You are at risk if being estranged from your family forever. And it happens...you are heart broken and devastated. As with any character, put yourself in her shoes.
Good luck..
opening night for us is in 2 weeks!!
