i GATTI in italiano? Or...CATS in Italian?

Good afternoon everyone!

Is there any recording of CATS performed in Italian? That is, the whole production, not just the "Italian Aria" portion in Growltiger. I'm just curious, as my daughter and I are studying Italian. I thought it would be neat if there were an Italian recording of CATS we could purchase. I seem to remember discussion back when about other language productions, so I was wondering if Italian is among them.

Grazie!

Buongiorno a tutti!

Hello Jennifer, Smile
the only official Cats production that has ever been seen here in Italy is the European tour (late Nineties, more or less). There have been amateur productions, but non of them was authorized, and most of them were in English. I have heard that a few of them tried an Italian translation of the lyrics, but as far as I know, there is no way to get them.

There is an Italian version of "Memory", sung by Sarah Brightman, but the lyrics are absolutely awful/ridicolous, and I wouldn't even consider them.

Grazie, Swan.

That answers my question! I thought that translating CATS into Italian would be difficult, but since I saw clips of a production in Japanese, I thought it might have been done.

OT - Do you know of any other Broadway musicals that have been translated in Italian well and recorded? My daughter Amber and I enjoy listening to music in Italian; we really enjoy the music of Patrizio Buanne, we're seeing him soon in St. Louis! Very Happy

So, I'm curious if there are any popular musicals that have been translated.

Yes, there are some. Rent, Guys and Dolls, A Chorus Line, Saturday Night Fever, Grease, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. All these ones have been recorded (PM me for further information).

Chicago, Sound of Music, Sweet Charity and Jesus Christ Superstar have been recently translated and performed, but as far as I know, there are no official recordings of them.

Cabaret is currently being performed in Milan, but I have no idea if there is an official recording (and considering the main performer is showgirl/starlette Michelle Hunziker, I wouldn't listen to it even if I were well-paid).

Sweeney Todd has been translated and performed by the Bernstein School for Musical Theatre, but there's no official recording for it, even though the translation was very good.

Hope that helps. If other titles will come to my mind, I will let you know. Smile

Notre Dame De Paris was done in Italian too wasn't it? I am sure I have that somewhere!

On the RENT dvd which I have you can watch it in Italian, however the songs are still in English but it has italian translations to the lyrics.

On the whole the translations are fairly ok but the subtitles and the dubbed audio differ slightly.

I still enjoy watching it in Italian! I'm always trying to find ways to fit the Italian words into the songs!

If you take a look into the 2006/2007 Dutch Cats programme there is short notice that Joop van den Ende (or Stage Entertainment?) would like to make Cats in Italy - in Rome or Milan - "in the future years".
It may be only a producer's wish and NOTHING is certain, but at least there is some small chance that the Cats will be produced in Italy too. Hope that it will be in this decade Very Happy

*nods* Yeah, tell me about it... sigh...
Many producers would love to produce Cats here, but I see at least three big problems. First: too much money to produce something that not so many people would see (Italy's culture about musicals is still very poor, people don't like to spend money for theatre). Second: the lyrics translation would be very difficult and would probably end up in something ridicolous, especially if compared to TS Eliot's original words. Third: I am not sure we have so many good performers that can sing AND dance the way a Cats cast should do.

@ Stoffey: yep, an Italian version of Notredame De Paris was produced, and had a really great success here. I hadn't mentioned it to jabremer66 because she was asking about Broadway musicals. Smile

@ jabremer66: will reply your PM soon - sorry, this weekend I had to work a lot.

I hope so too! Or at least, that it will be sometime in May or June 2010! How is that for a specific request? LOL

My daughter and I are planning a trip to Italy after she graduates college...how cool would it be to see CATS in Italy? If only it would happen...
