I didn't get the part i wanted!!!!!!!!I know it sounds terrible but i really really really wanted Adelaide in my high school production. i didn't get it....i got Sarah. I don't mean to brag but i really was the best at both parts. This stupid, fat, ugly girl who can't sing or belt for that matter got Adelaide and she keeps rubbing it in my face. I'm happy for her cuz it's her first lead but i'm still upset about it. Should i be so upset that i got Sarah and not Adelaide?

If other people see you "upset" about your role, they have every right to smack you in the face...
Think of all the other people who tried out and have smaller parts...get over it...
Seriously.

Well, it's easy to understand that you're upset. I think at one time or another, we've all lost out on a role we've wanted. If you honestly thought you were the best at both roles, maybe there was no one else for Sarah so you were the only person who could handle that role. What looks really unprofessional is the fact that you are calling the girl who got Adelaide some harsh names. In show business, there are often many factors that go into deciding who gets a part. Sometimes the most talented person doesn't get cast and a person who is far less talented does get cast. It's not fair, but it's life. The best thing you can do is appreciate the role you got because I'm sure tons of girls wanted it. Tell yourself that you're going to be the best you can be at this role. And maybe someday, you will get a chance to play Adelaide in anotehr production. Be happy with the part, you will learn to love it, trust me. And don't forget to congratulate Adelaide, because if you are nice to her chances are she will be nice to you.

I don't show that i'm upset about it. at least i try not too. i know that other people wanted the role that i got. i just need a little time to vent before i absolutly love my role. chances are that by the time we're done with it i'll be estatic about it. the girl who plays adelaide is really snobby about it and i do congratulate her and make her feel good about getting the part, but she doesn't return the favor to me. instead she says things like "All of my songs are SO fun. Sarah's songs suck! No soprano can ever make that song sound good!" so it's really a kick in the face to me. this is the only time i've ever called her names and it's just because i'm fed up. i've tried telling her that i'm a lead too but she doesn't care. The director sees me being nice and her being...well i won't say it but you get the idea. I don't know. and you are right IT'S EFFING HIGH SCHOOL!!!!

That's totally understandable. When I don't get the part I want, you can find me venting and crying and looking like a mess. Just remember, just because she's the "better" role doesn't mean you can't make Sarah better. This is your chance to shine and when people walk out of the theater on your show night, make them say "Sarah was amazing". You have a right to be upset, but for all you know, the director might feel that Sarah is the better role and that only someone like you would be good at it.

All Sarah's songs suck? Excuse me? You get to do an entire solo while playing drunk! It doesn't get much more fun than that!
I understand the need to vent, truly I do. But you said it yourself that you were the best auditioner for both roles, and Sarah requires a stronger legit-sounding vocalist. The director probably thought you were the only one who could do justice to the role both from a singing and acting standpoint.
So now that you've vented, go have fun with the role!

Sounds to me like she's trying to build herself up by putting you down. I personally think that If I Were A Bell is one of the best songs in the show. And judging by the production of G&D that I've just finished, I think Sarah needs to have a stronger voice than Adelaide; while Adelaide's songs might be more "fun", I think Sarah's songs are more difficult to pull off well. Plus she's probably jealous that you get to kiss Sky Masterson!

Why are you so upset that you got Sarah? I got the part of Sarah recently too and it means everything to me. Just enjoy having the chance to play such a wonderful role.
(P.S. Sorry you didn't get Adelaide)

Can we just clear something up here?
Adelaide and Nathan are the secondary leads. Sarah and Sky are the first leads. Get it? Good.
Moving on.
Congrats on the role of Sarah.

uhh..Nathan and Adelaide are the leads.
if anything you can consider both couples the lead roles but if you have to pick one set..its Nathan and Adeilde.

^Agreed. Sarah and Sky are very important, but Adelaide and Nathan have bigger roles and are more important to the story, IMO.

I beg to differ. I think that both couples have equal roles. Sarah and Sky are the romantic leads and Nathan and Adelaide are the comic leads.

Well, in the full actual show, yes they're both equal. But in the Jr. Production (like my school did) the leads are fairly obviously Sky and Sarah. So it all depends on your outlook, I guess. And your show's arrangement.
Oh, and I'm not trying to undermind Adelaide and Nathan. I was Adelaide. Lol.

Oh, believe me, I agree 100%. Half the amazing songs were cut (no sue me and Take Back Your Mink? WHAT?) and the show was very VERY slanted toward Sarah and Sky's relationship. Which is nice, but, like you guys said, it's supposed to be an equal balance.
And the Jr. C ompany sucked. We didn't get our scripts until 4 weeks after when they were due to arrive. By that time, we only have 2 weeks til show time.

What? We're doing junior version but it still has Sue Me (My favorite song) and Mink. I think the parts are equal but our show kinda slants it towards Adelaide and Nathan but I think that's only because the two best actors in the school play them and they do amazing but I guess it really depends on the attitude and personality your particular show.

And one huge point that no one's made yet-
You have YEARS ahead of you for another shot at Adelaide!!!! Sarah is supposed to be young, and Adelaide is supposed to be in her 30's, at least, so you will definitely have another shot someday at that part, in college, or community theater or wherever. I know it's hard to think that far ahead now, but chin up! G&D is not a show that's going anywhere!

except Adewlaide is the actual female lead as had bene discussed. Sarah is either supporting to Adelaide or Equal depending on the take.

doesnt matter..actually Guys and Dolls was based on 2 different Runyon stories. If you read the back of the OBC recording it clearly states in Abe Burrows own words that Adelaide is the female lead.
|
Sweeney Hyde
|
I think when it comes to guys and dolls, sarah is the laed, however, adelaide is a much more enjoyable character to watch, usually. I have always found the part of sarah a little dry. Adelaide is such a funny role with such cute songs, whereas sarah's are a little more serious.
|
Eponine93
|
Personally, I believe Sarah's the female lead, at least in terms of music. She has more songs. Traditionally, she bows right after Adelaide and Nathan. Besides, Sky is the male lead. Sarah is playing opposite of Sky, so in all technicalities, she's the lead. Additionally, she's the part most widely recognized as "lead" and probably the most difficult part. Adelaide is definitely more cartoonish. Sarah requires a strong soprano and the ablity to act as more than a bargirl- it gets to the point where she actually has to cry onstage before "Marry the Man Today." So, I view Sarah as the lead.
But that's just me.

Sarah IS the female lead in my opinion, an Adelaide is secondary. The story centers around Sarah. She is not a bland character unless you make her one.

So you made this thread just to bitch and moan? Did you really think that other people on this board would feel bad for you, who thinks she's better than everyone else? You got a MAIN part. Many of us have struggled for our entire careers to get to step out of the ensemble.
