HSM Audition ---> Gabriella?
Hiya everybody! I am auditioning for HSM in one month and was looking for audition tips for Gabriella. I want this part more than anything and have been doing character excersizes (writing diary entries as Gabriella to try and get inside her head. It's going great!) and of course vocal excersizes. I have done the show before. Does anyone have any constructive ideas on what to do when auditioning for/preparing to audition for Gabriella in HSM? Directors who have casted the show before are especially welcome to answer.
Thanks in advance!!

make sure you don't just go for the sweet and innocent character. she's so much more than that, so don't do impersonations of VAH.... BAD IDEA!!!
i love the diary idea, it'll help you to add depth to your performance
as the show goes on, Gabriella gets more and more confident, so if you have to perform 2 or more songs in an audition, make sure you show those contrasts.
don't try to copy VAH's vocal. i hate it. your director probably doesn't, but no-one likes a wannabe sound - they'll probably be sick of them by now
lastly...
enjoy yourself! in most of G's songs, she's happy (other than when there was me and you) so don't just stand there and sing!
luv ya!

just wanted to say....the diary idea is REALLY good!
basically what i think you need to do is don't act like you're just auditioning for some cheesy disney show, because as cheesy as disney and especially HSM are, you can make it not cheesy and actually make gabriella real. the songs in HSM are very pop, so at your audition make sure you just get into what you're singing, and have fun!
also, as the person said above, don't try to act like vanessa. if you're planning on watching the movie for tips and stuff, don't pay attention to her...lol.
good luck!

I'm also auditioning for the show soon...not for Gabriella, probably more of a Ryan. I was just wondering what the vocal ranges are for the guys. I've heard it's really high and that's all fine with me, I was just curious.

in the movie ryan goes upto at least a c, and not very low. I think he'd be an alto if you weren't really bothered about being a male alto. i see no problem with it, and it's one of the funniest male alto roles out there.

A high C? shoot me in the face. I hope I can pull that off, but then again I haven't auditioned yet so I might not even have to worry about it. Love to play that role though, hilarious!

I have a feeling that's only once in a song, though. plus you could do it in falsetto. if you really struggle, you could do it down the octave. listen to the soundtrack of the movie. in i can't take my eyes off you, most of his "oooh-"ing is completely ad-libbed, so you probably wouldn't have to go THAT high!

True. I have actually only seen the movie once. I might just have to rent it in order to get better acquainted before auditions.

The highest Ryan goes is an A. Not a C. (If my memory serves me correctly.) Everything else is pretty much mid-range for him.
In case you are wondering, all of the other guys are tenors. It's a very tenor-packed show.

A is much better. I figured it was a pretty Tenor heavy show. I have a friend who's a bass that is thinking about auditioning...wonderful voice, but I don't think he'll be singing a high A anytime soon.

Not to steal the thread, but I'm auditioning soon for HSM too and I'm going for Sharpay. I'm singing "My Strongest Suit" from Aida, just because it works really well and I'm really comfortable with it, even though it's kind of an obvious choice. For my contrasting, I'm singing "Reflection" from Mulan.
Comments, suggestions?

Don't think it's poppy, snappy or fun enough for Sharpay. Especially Reflection, would probably not sing that.

I agree that reflections isnt right, but strongest suit should be good. it shows sharpay's personality and that you can belt high.

You think My Strongest Suit isn't poppy enough?
Do you have any suggestions for another song?

I recently auditioned for the West End production of this show and the song "Girls just want to have fun" went down well and the girl got a recall.

I am also auditioning for HSM in a little over the month, most likely for Sharpay, but it's a combined for that, Little Mermaid, Mary Poppins, and The Lion King. The only other role i'd be considered for is Arielle in LM. I'm technically a soprano but can belt...and I have no idea what to sing! It's going to be a BIG audition...I need one "brief" (i'm guessing 16 bars, 32 tops) song that shows range/personality...can anyone think of something that would make the CDs think of me as both Arielle AND Sharpay?
