How would Margaret Hamilton feel about Wicked?

Most of us are familiar with the story of Margaret Hamilton at the train station. And in one interview she told the story of when her agent called her and told her they wanted her in the Wizard of Oz, he said that they wanted her and she asked, "What part?" And he replied, "The Wicked Witch." "Oh."

So do you think Margaret would be happy or proud of her character's new(?) story. She didn't seem to always be proud of her character, so how do you think she would would like the reimagination of Elphaba/the Wicked Witch?

You quoted it wrong.
..."What part?" "The Wicked Witch....What else?"
It's funnier that way. Smile

She would BS and say she loves it, but deep down inside she would know it for the crappy musical it is.

i think she would enjoy it because it's cute.

dat seems just lyke her.
mezzo_soprano

I think she would like the fact that they made Elphaba for animal rights because she was for animal rights.

I don't think it'd have much of an effect on her... it was just one role she played in her career. What I want to know is what Baum would think of it (and the novel).

Baum may have enjoyed the musical, but there is absolutely no way he would have enjoyed the book. He may have like the concept of a story about 'how the Wicked Witch became Wicked' but the novel deals with so many things that were really taboo at that time and so could easily have been seen as a defamation of his work or even just... well, smut =/

Baum's novel is just as political as Mcguire's.
wicked_boy

I think Baum intended his version to be more "fairy - tale like", with a hint of politics, rather than McGuire's being bomb - loaded with politics.

I think Hamilton would have laughed at Elphaba, she seemed to have a good sense of humour in interviews. She probably would have thought "Why do I get portrayed as a haggy witch and Idina get portrayed as a sexy witch?!?!?"

Indeed, it was one of her many roles, but it was deffinately her most famous. She often signed autographs with WWW (Wicked Wtich of the West) as a notation, so she must have eigther realized that that was one of her best, most famous, etc., or she must have been really fond or proud of it.
