How do you play Mr. Sowerberry?

Yep, I'm playing Mr. Sowerberry in the school musical and honestly don't have a clue how to play the character. He just has very few lines - the song is his only moment to grab the spotlight. I don't want to go scene stealing or something, but I want people to enjoy my performance as much as the rest of the cast so some help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Well first off this is a normal question for yuor director.

I've seen him played several ways... like Vincent Price.. or as an alchoholic beffuddled codger, even as a peter lorre type.

have fun ..the sowerberries tend to a high point in most productions of the show.
music is my life!!!

he's quite creepy and my director decided to make him and Mrs like a couple of corpses... funny...

the best way I've seen him play is a creeper. It was histerical and one of the best moments in the play, when he came in all creepy and said "What's happening in my paralor" the audience burst out laughing.

I like it in an Edith and Igor (are those the right names) fashion, almost a "these are the facts, no big deal" attitude towards it.

Well in my school we wanted to really highten the difference between Mrs. Sowerberry and Mr. Sowerberry, since she's so agressive toards him, so we played him as a whipped man who's married to a total dictator. Mrs. Sowerberry would hit him all the time and put him down.

It all depends on how the other person plays Mrs. Sowerberry, it's very important to make sure those characters fit together, which adds so much to the scenes. I think the more you just practice working off each other the better.

My favourite Sowerberry family, though anachronistic, were done up as Riff Raff and Magenta.

When I played Mr Sowerberry I played him very camp and creepy but I had to be very careful not to become a caricature.

First, I would suggest watching the 1968 movie- I'm sure that would give you some great ideas. My only other bit of advice would be to talk to whoever is playing Fagin and have him reflect on how he plans to play his character, because IMO Sowerberry and Fagin could be played very similiarly, if desired.
