How do you pick headshots?

So I did the easy part, which is getting them done. Now I need to pick three good ones to have edited and then one for my college's big cattle call auditions next Mon. I might post some here for y'all to see, but I just want to know what you guys think are the qualities of a good head shot and how I should narrow them down! Thanks!
Brigantine

Basics that I've learned here (mostly through MaryMag and Jazzy)
- lighting (nothing that is too shadowed or gives any weird contours to your face)
- Eyes - eyes need to have a 'spark', some emotion behind them
- angle - sometimes, some angles just don't work
- of course you want to make sure your clothing and hair are behaving themselves, etc.... no weird random piece of hair sticking up (duh)
- that people who know you well (close friends/family) can still say yes, that looks like you... only looking GREAT

POST THEM!! I love looking at headshots. Smile

My problem is that pretty much ALL of them fit that criteria, which I guess is a good problem to have. When I've narrowed it down to around 20 or so, I'll post them. There's around 300 that we took!

If they all are that good, then you have to find- which ones have a special "something" that makes it stand out? Or says something about you or your personality? Or says something about your 'type' or what kind of characters you're going for.

That's EXACTLY what I'm trying to find!

You could also ask some one who knows about casting or photography or both. I'd be glad to be of service (photo major) if you are still in a pickle.

Okay, here are two of my absolute favorites. What do you think?
(I apologize if they are giant and take forevs to load)

I'm trying to choose something that says spunky and quirky with a hint of sass. That smirk is very trademark of me.
Brigantine

I personally like your 'look' in the second one (although I like the shirt better in the first one! LOL) any with the collared shirt that are as sassy? Smile

...looking again, I think the red shirt one is... hmm... well, the 'smirk' could be "intelligent and quirky" or "bratty"... the blue shirt one seems more "I'm fun" to me...
bittenbythetheatrebug

I like the one in the blue shirt. You look like you're genuinely having a good time. Smile
RED15

The second one, the angle creates a lot of interest

I'm sooo torn! A lot of friends are now telling me they like this one, which is growing on me:

OMG That has to be the one! Its that same interesting angle but your smile is awesome, why were you hiding your teeth!?!!?!?! They're like perfect!
christinadaae

I like the second one you posted.

Your jaw looks good.... does that sound wierd.

Anyway, I remember this story MaryMag told me once when I was trying to pick my headshots. She said "Imagine a casting director, stumbling in from a long night of partying, and realizing he has to pick someone for a part tomorrow. He only has the headshots to go by, and when he flips through all of them he says "This one!" to yours."

This is the best one photographically, however two really captures the essence of my Jaymie. Not the first though. I'd go as far to say #3 for Musical Theatre, #2 for Plays. But you are adorable in either.

I would go with the third one. It really stands out and catches my eye. Whereas on the second one, I like the smirk, but the shadow is distracting.
Beagle On Stage

They are all great pictures, but for a headshot I would go with the first one. The second one obscures your face a little, and the third cuts off the top of your head and is more a picture of your shirt and the wall behind you than of your face. They want to see you, not an artfully executed piece of photography that you happen to be in.

A little update: I actually ended up picking this one

The audition is for like seven or eight different shows (the one that I mainly want to do is The Threepenny Opera) so I chose this one because it's a bit more "universal" but always shows a slight sinister side that might be good for 3PO.
SmallTownIngenue

I like it. Very Happy

You have a very versataile look...like, I can see you playing mangenues as well as comic character roles. That's a very good thing. Very Happy

^Thank you, if you met me IRL you would think of me *more* as the comic type than the leading man but thank you!
