How do you feel about swearing?

This is another one of those posts I'm probably going to regret.
JP

As I posted in the other thread - I posted a poll like this fairly recently. It has gone in the recent pruning, which is horribly unfortunate. It didn't ask quite the same questions as yours - it gave the following options:

1) I don't think swear words should be allowed at all
2) I object to swearing when it's directed at other people
3) I don't mind in general, but there are certain words I think should be barred and I've PMed a mod to tell them what those words are
4) I think swearing should be allowed.

The majority of people responding agreed with (2).

JP
Fontinau

I like mine better.

Anyway, if #2 was indeed the answer, let's look back at the issue of our most recent ban-ee. How much of his off-colour language was actually directed at anyone? Not a whole lot, I think.
Dax

In general:
Most of the time I get incensed when I hear swearing used when there are small children around.

Most of the time I find swearing used inappropriately anyway. (I rarely use it myself. Too indicative of not only a lack of self-discipline using such to punctuate a sentence demonstrates a lack of education)

Usage in a forum...*shrugs* Discourages children from posting...

(If I had children interested in musical theatre, this wouldn't be website I would point them to. They'll bump into the ugly realities later. For now, there are literally hundreds of other websites besides this one, despite apparent belief, and it appears that there are still too many here still playing college kiddie crap.)

Swearing is a part of life that any established authority that wants to be "classy" or "safe" covers up in fear of corruption and degradation. It's easy to target those who swear and claim that they are subversive or impacting others negatively, when in fact they're simply expressing themselves using words with more powerful meanings than the others he or she is impacting.

To say, "f*cking" or "fudge" or "flip" or any other euphamism is a cowardly way to mean the f-word. People should be more mature about the use of language.
Salome

I fuucking swear all the god damned time and i fuccking enjoy it.

I don't like it, however, I think it has engrained itself in our culture's everyday vocabulary. I don't think it's acceptable, but I'm (clearly) not personally against it. I'm not on a crusade to censor everyone, but, if I could make my own option, I'd say it shouldn't be acceptable.
The REAL Ciaron

I do curse sometimes but I try not to in front of women. I hate when men talk gross with women around. Gets on my nerves!
Salome

what about women swearing in front of men? Wink

I think that a person can articulate their intention better if their vocabulary isn't reliant upon vulgarities.

That being said, I'm not particularly offended by it - though for the most part I do try to avoid cursing. It wouldn't be prudent to my career if every other word started with "F" and rhymed with firetruck.

Also, I have noticed if you reserve the well-placed curse word for special instances, it tends to be more effective.

So. Here's the thing. If we're worried about offending or opening the eyes of the young 'uns on this site... I'm sure they hear much worse in the hallways of their school, and it's really the parent's responsibility to monitor their child's computer usage. Why hold back who you are because of the potential audience. Now - if someone gets "cursed out" and becomes offended by it, it is their responsibility to report it to the mods. No one else's because of the "potential" offending factor.

So... I'm not really sure how to fill out the survey, since none really fits me. Add not offended by it except under variable circumstances, and you can sign me up.

Haven't we discussed this already?

Andy.
LaurelDP

I don't know.

I was pretty much raised to curse. And I always have.

I don't think it's unacceptable, I just think it's, at times, inappropriate. And I try to control my vocabulary around those who it offends, but it's hard.

Most of the time my swearing is used for comedy effect, and hardly ever is it used to stress an adjective or used in a mean context.

OK. I am fed up of this almost ‘saintly’ image of our most recent ban-ee. THIS is a small example of the person you are defending.

This is ONLY the posts that were physically removed in the last two days [get that? just TWO days] before we dicussed banning him again. This doesn’t count the huge number of his swear words or the milder, but direct insults, that were left on the board before the decision to ban him was under discussion. It also doesn’t count the many insults that were ignored because we knew he was going to be banned.

It also does not include the things he posted when he was banned TWICE before or the strike he got about two weeks ago.

Every one of these posts breaks one or other part of this agreement, made by every member who joins this forum.

“You agree not to post any abusive, obscene, vulgar, slanderous, hateful, threatening, sexually-oriented or any other material that may violate any applicable laws.”

Not all of them contain swearing because despite what you may think, he wasn’t banned for swearing alone. Swearing is not the only issue with these posts. They were all aimed at members here on the forum [and no, not me or any other mod, in case you are wondering].

Here you go, courtesy of Evan Grubbs:

1]I wish you'd die.

2] I've done more in the last two days to deserve strikes than I did when I got them.
I really should be banned by now.
You're all ----.

3] You're a stupid idiot!

4] Now you're just dick slobber.

5] Feeble, son.
Feeble as sh!t

6]You're now: Cock Slobber LlamaDouche.

7] Douche's taste bad and give you yeast infections.
You guys suck.
Some of you should probably just die.

8]You're just jealous 'cos I don't suck your cock like JennyAnyDots and Loppy.

9] Bitch we've had this talk.
You know the minute he started posting and no one else interesting was around you jumped at the chance to verbally fellate him.
You're Mountain Rain SheepDouche now.

10] THE CAMEL TOE YOU ---- IDIOTS!
HE'S TALKING ABOUT THE MOTHER ---- CAMEL TOE!
I ALREADY ---- SAID IT!
SHUT THE ---- UP!

---------------
My apologies to the board for repeating these things but it goes to show a small part of the work we have to do here.
Desperado

#10 is my favorite.
Caitlin (Pipes)

I hate swearing.

Yes, if someone feels strongly about something, drops a hammer on their toe, etc. then I can see the validity.

However, if I talk to someone, and they can't get through a couple sentences without swearing, I think it's unattractive. While the person could very well be intelligent, it gives the impression of a four or five word vocabulary.

It's a shame it's become so normalized in our society, and I repeat that I can again understand when it's used in certain situations. I just wish I knew more people who could have valid conversations without swearing like a sailor. Confused
Mel AKA Maureen

I fuucking talk like a goddamn sailor.

There's an automatic filter that would star out the word if she spelled it properly. Another common method is f uck.
Aimee

Actually you can currently say ---- with the filter, just not ----. odd eh?

Not defending him. Attacking the rationale for banning him.

Never said he was. Just pointing out that JP's poll result would exclude one of the most users whose language was most universally acknowledged as "offensive" on the grounds that most of his swears usually weren't directed at anyone in particular - the exceptions you dregged up notwithstanding.

I already told you in my last PM to stop ascribing motives to me that I don't have. Now stop.

It really is. I totally thought ---- would be filtered as well. That is very strange.

I think its going to be changed soon though.

Though I have to say, its its directed at a person here it will be removed by the mods anyway.

YAY ICE CREAM!! Very Happy
wicked_diva

I don't swear. I don't really care if other people do, but I think that for those who do swear, it makes them look uneducated.
ShadowInTheWings

I think it seriously says something about this board that a poll about swearing seems to have become an excuse to swear. I am not completely against swearing, though there are quite a few vulgarities I will not use. Anyone familliar with me will probably know which ones. The "milder" swear words I don't have particular problem with, depending on why they're being used. When they're used at someone, that's inappropriate. For emphasis, well it's your choice. I myself use them for cheap laughs sometimes when the situation calls for it, and occasionally in anger or frustration. Generally right before I start crying is when my swearing gets really bad.
actor05

swearing is overrated

And now that you know the truth, will you take back your attack and admit he was banned [for the third and final time, I remind you] for very good reasons?

Never said he was.

And I never said you said he was.
I said "despite what you may think". Note the crucial word may in my sentence. It clearly shows that I am not saying you do think that, just that you may think that.

See my last comment, I didn't, you misread it.

It's fine by me, as long as its not too excessive.
