How do I get people to audition for my musical

I have a musical "A song for Europe" but I can't seem to attract anyone to come for an audition. I've tried advertising in local papers, putting up posters, ads in shop windows, the internet and emailing amateur dramatic company's.

All adverts have direction to my website www.asongforeurope.co.uk where there is a script sample, synopsis, blog and twelve song samples.

Any suggestions would be gladly welcomed.

I'm writing a musical right now and already have friends in mind for the roles.

I purposely kept the cast small for this reason. ALSO, I didn't even feel like the time was right for me to write a musical UNTIL I'd made enough connections on theater to pull it off. I now know enough directors, costumers, actors, musicians, writers, etc, to do me enough free favors or cheap work to pull it off.

Make friends, yo! Help out at other theaters - either acting in them, being in the orchestra, directing, costuming, teching, etc etc etc, whatever it is you do! That's how I made all my contacts - through being in shows.

Go speak to local universities and high schools theatre depts. Send a mass email to everyone on the list.
Maybe for the first round of auditions they don't have to prepare anything. Just sing Happy Birthday and a cold reading?
Have cookies at auditions..just kidding...kinda Laughing
Good Luck

Also try putting an ad in the newspaper.

Thanks for your tips, but waiting to write a musical until you have everyone on board is like saying get a publisher before you write a book!
I tried the working in an amateur dramatics company, but like every other company they were scared of losing money by staging something new...the joke is they done Hot Mikado and lost thousands....

Good comments...however, in the UK we don't have the same theatre mentality in schools as you do there (I've lived in Canada) in addition its difficult to find Northern European looking, and good English speaking actors where I live (this is not a racist comment, just a fact) maybe I should move to the States or Canada where people have a little more courage.

Have you tried contacting TheStage Newspaper? I know you said you have already put an advert in but might be worthwhile to see if they could do a piece on it.

I'm about to check out the link now Very Happy

Just listened to 'Eurovision's Here Again...' reminds me of Abba's Waterloo (the little do-do-do-do bit) Sorry that isn't clear lol

You spotted it...well done. I used the begining of Waterloo on purpose. Although a completely different melody I wanted it to sound a little tacky and dated.

I asked first...Bjorn was quite flattered Very Happy

Bit late posting this but I thought I would mention a few things...

1. Submit your work to the Cardiff International Musical Theatre festival. I am not sure if they are running this year (usually in the autumn) but it worth contacting them anyway. They specifically choose 10 new musicals each year to workshop with professional cast and crew:

http://www.theatre-wales.co.uk/companies/company_details.asp?ID=114

2. There are a huge amount of actors and far too few auditions, so you not finding anyone to audition for your show really surprises me. Are you based in London? That sometimes makes a difference. Advertise in Castweb, Castnet and PCR and you should be inundated with CVs really.

3. I realise you are probably not able to pay the actors if your musical is workshopped but offer to pay expenses and make sure you choose a central venue with a professional setting that actors can invite prospective agents, casting directors, etc to and use your musical as a showcase to find representation and/or further work.

oooo idea here! why don't you first contact schools and community theatres about doing a reading of your show, then, if the reading goes well they might be willing to produce it for real!
