How come...

the Phantom never ever picks up Christine after she faints during Music of the Night?
The Very Angry Woman

Because too many Phantom actors were hurting themselves doing it, so they eliminated that bit of blocking.

Well that's understandable...but I kinda miss it....

The London Phantoms do catch Christine when she faints, and puts her in the boat/bed. London Phantoms playing elsewhere has sometimes brought this with them into other productions (Peter Karrie in Canada etc).

I think this easily could have been done elsewhere, but all international productions sticks closer to the US ones than the West End ones (I don't know if this is due to copyright stuff* or because of the US/international directors). And US safety rules seems a bit stricter than most other countries, which means the Phantom don't catch Christine when she falls, he don't fall through the trap door after "Masquerade" and the chandelier falls so slooooooow.

* When I say "copyright stuff", I mean that there are certain features they only do in West End/the UK, and it seems like a concious choice. A newer Broadway Christine asked to do the Claire Moore cadenza when she started in the role, and got the reply that no, that one was reserved for London (even though Rebecca Caine brought it with her to Toronto after having performed in West End). Ditto for the Wandering Child trio and other details.

He caught her when I saw it. But then, I do remember an interview with one of the original production team stating the Australian chandelier fall as being insanely fast.

Are you sure he doesn't fall through the trapdoor after masquerade? I've seen the tour version, in which is is clear to anyone who knows what to look for that he is whisked off stage under the cover of smoke and lights and noise, but I have also seen it in NYC, and I think he went down through the trap.

He definitely doesn't use the trap door on Broadway. I sat front row the first time I saw it in NYC and noticed that he "vanished" by running off stage behind the ensemble members' cloaks. It wasn't until later that I thought, "Hmmm, I could've sworn that scene had a trap door."

The NYC production used to use the trap door for Red Death, but too many actors were injured during the scene that, after Hugh Panaro hurt his back in a fall because of it, they discontinued it entirely.

That still puzzles me. Is the Broadway trapdoor different, so it's easier to get damaged? I don't think this has been a problem elsewhere*.

*there's been one or two damages, sure, but not more than other damages one might get when performing
