HomophobiaThis has really been bugging me the last month or so. I just need to know that not everyone is like these two girls are...I have a site called the Misto Project. It's a humour-based site designed to "show you the horrifying truth of the matter of Mistoffelees' sexuality" and states right up the top of the main page and in a warning on the front page that it's intended as humour. A lot of people seem to like the site, or at least aknowledge that although they dont approve of the joke the site itself is nothing to get offended by. And then the accusations start. According to two girls in particular (they may even be the same person) I'm a gay man who created the site because I want someone to "blame".
In response to this, I do admit to being a little sarcastic and adding a captioned photo to the site that shows my head and shoulders. The caption was "This is me. As you can see, I am a homosexual. And dont be fooled by my effeminacy, I am actually a man. And a state politician." *sigh* Usually humour works as a deterrent. But either these girls have never bothered to look, or they truly believe that I'm a peculiarly young, crossdressing state politician... Because then there was this -
I think the most worrying thing is, as you might have guessed, all of this is going on through the Golden Jellicles site. Which means these girls are not only homophobic, but cowards as well. I have gotten some (un-asked for) support from other people, but that support just seems to make things worse. Example below:
And in response:
So what do you think? Is this sort of thing OK? Is it common? Is there even anything I can do that I haven't done already? It's not being called gay (or a man) that bothers me, it's the idea that I'm supposedly "blaming innocent people". For the record - it can't possibly be because they're Jacob Brent fangirls, since his only appearance is a mention that his name is the same as that of a depraved villain in a series of adult novels. (A heterosexual depraved villain at that.) Is the CATS fandom humourless and not ready for site that pokes tongue-in-cheek fun at the jellicles? Flitterbug - the first gay, crossdressing state politician. You do have to admit it has a nice ring to it. |

That's just stupid and you know it. And you know you know it, so don't let it bother you. So what if you've got two humorless homophobics that don't like your site? You like your site and many, many people like your site and that's what matters, so don't dwell on the bad stuff.
Just please don't take it down! It's my favorite site! Besides, what would I tell people who see my Misto Is Gay banners if I don't have a link to back it up? EDIT: I didn't actually answer the question, now did I? Lol, I got so worked up I completely skipped it. Ok, so here's my answer: You're doing everything right. There's nothing you could possibly be doing better. I think even your updates are fine too, lol, not few and far between at all. There will always be people who are too stupid to read the fine print. It's there fault, not yours. Just ignore them. |

What I Think:
They're obviously 11-13 year old fangirls that have no interaction with older fans that they can pick up sense around, as was my case (though I had never been homophobic, go me). And a preteen-fangirl-with-no-sense-to-pick-up has no sense of humour and will create a bloody crusade over anyone who even looks like they're insulting their favorite character. Of course they wouldn't see "intended as humour", too blind with moronic rage. They see 'gay' and 'Mistoffelees' in the same sentence and immediately go apeshit. Is it OK: Heck no. They need to be beaten over the head if they're NOT some preteen fangirl with no mature rolemodels in the fandom. But since they are...it's still not OK, but obviously talking sense into them or being polite isn't going to do a thing. It's to be expected, but it's not ok, we can't do anything about it, except to silently beg that they'll mature (because it's a 50/50 deal with people at this point Common: Yes. Oh goodness yes, unfortunately. Anything to be Done: Ignore them. It would drive me mad if I was in your shoes, because I would love to give them a reality bitchslap a la my preteen fangirl years, but since it's overall a useless attempt...ignore 'em. Blame: You're not blaming innocent people. That's it. It's a humor site. And heck, you can't BLAME someone for being gay anyway. Is: Yes. Yes, it is. Because it's a fandom. But there ARE people who are mature enough to appreciate humor in the fandom, especially towards their favorite characters- or ANY character- you need to change nothing in that site. ...heh, my favorite part was the "don't borned wishing to be gays" part. I hope this kid's grammar and spelling is this bad in school. My god I hope so. Just out of spite. |

The immense stupidity of people never ceases to amaze me.
No this isn't ok, but yes it is common. But to be honest, I don't think there is anything you can do other than what you have already done. btw, You are NOT blaming innocent people. The only ones blaming the innocent is them! |

LYK OMG FLITTERBUG U R TEH GAY FOR SAYING MISTO IS GAY
Some people are just going to jump all over anything that has the potential to be offensive to the overreactors of the world. It doesn't matter what fandom you're in or what joke you're trying to make. I'd like to think that Cats has slightly more mature fans...but then I remember that I was 12 when I became a Cats fan, and I sigh. |

God, kids can be such asses sometimes. I know they are young, and we can hope they will grow out of it, but like everyone else has stated, its still no excuse.
People (old or young) are afraid of things that they don't understand. I've seen it first hand. I was raised in a very religious environment, where this kind of thought was not only accepted, it was encouraged. I'm not saying religion is bad-I'm just saying the situation I was in was bad. But no matter what I was taught, it never seemed right to me that someone could be hated because of who they were. So maybe I was smart enough to see through it all. All I know is, I grew up, I've always had gay friends, and I'd like to think that I'm a good person. But back to these kids- they come across as very childish, and immature, which they are. But no matter how stupid they sound, the underlying issue comes from something much greater. Someone initially had to teach them to think this way. As much as I'd like to think that our society is progressing, I know there will always be older people, teaching younger people to hate. Wow....I've gone so far off topic its not even funny. Maybe its more of a personal issue with me. I'll get off my soap box now. In short, keep your site, ignore them, don't let it get to you, and surround yourself with smart people that share your views. |

*rolls eyes* I agree with what everyone else has said...apart from the fact that they said these people could be 11-13 - my grammar and spelling was so much better than that, back when I was younger and Im not any sort of genious. That said, I can't imagine anyone younger doing something like this either...what has the world come to? (ok that was a little drastic, but really, I mean - come on !)
Don't let other people's lack of humour and even understanding put you down because you're better than that and you know it! |

Thankyou to everyone who replied for your support.
*sneakily* I also figured that if I kicked up a fuss on a few forums it might discourage those two from continuing in their actions. Promotion and awareness never go astray when you're talking about two girls who 'hate gays'. |

well, I never! (Huffs and crosses arms.) Don't those girls know anything? For example, proper English? Do they know sentence structure? Honestly. Besides, if not for gay men on stage... there would be a whole lot less men on stage with flair, pizazz, and Presssssssssto!!! (emphasis on the 'essss) And I think the site is funny, and as a gay Misto myself. I MUST agree with the theory. Besides, he does come practically running to Tugger's beck and call doesn't he? |

I also said that they probably aren't interacting with more mature fans much at all. Set a kid that age down with a computer and thinking they're talking to some faceless person or another kid their age and generally you've got the abomination that is chatspeak and the horror those girls just committed in butchering the English language. |

Oh, I like that! Prat.... can I assume that is pretentious brat? "NICE!"
Adds that to vocabulary. |

*shudders*
When I come up against flames like that, I can hardly get past the horrid grammar and language usage, not to mention the complete lack of thought behind such comments! |
||||||||

*adds helpfully* The dictionary definition of the word 'prat' is "the buttocks". *adjusts halo* Just thought you might like to know. |

I'm a gay man. You're site is excellent. They are just kids who haven't got a clue. Ignore them. Keep up the good work x

oh~ feels dumb. Is this like when I visited you all in the U.K. and thought you were mad, when y'all were going on about missing Lorry in the morning with your trash. I was like, you meet some one named Lorry and give her your garbage? Well my goodness that's odd. Then of course Belle educated me in the ways of Skips and Lorries. |

Not to mention he licked Old Deuteronomy... Am I the only one who found that a bit strange for a seemingly teenage+ male cat? Anyone? Anyone? |
||||||||
| Flitterbug |
Dont give me ideas, poppet. lol Next thing you know I'll have a section on why Misto has a thing for father-figures.
Edit: Update on the situation. Now everyone who likes the site is not a "true Cats fan". *raises an eyebrow*
This is starting to get a little ridiculous. ~_~ |

Who cares? So Helena doesn't like your site. Look at all the people on here and Golden Jellicles who have rushed to support you! That's what you should be dwelling on, let Helena talk herself out.

Actually, I'm pleased as punch and as amused as... something amusing. |

uhm, like half the people here were CATS performers/tech crew. So does that make us NOT REAL cast members?
(rolls eyes) Tell them to go read some Harry Potter fan smut and go away. I personally like the Draco Malfoy, Vincent Crabbe, and, Gregory Goyl, romances...meow~ At least the teeny-brats who smite those sites can write grammatically correct sentences. |

The site that hosts the comments is not mine, and the comments posted are undeleteable unless (I assume) done directly by the site administration. Since I'm not part of that administration there's nothing I can do but watch the comments pile up, laugh at their grammar, and hope they eventually get sick of it all. (RB - HP smut is categorised by the terrible and insane. Which would you class the D/V/G romances under precisely? Terrible or insane?) |

My guess is Both. (add in a bit of morbid, and a dash of get-a-life) Dies laughing.
ah OH YES! Perkins, Home of the peanut butter chocolate cheese cake heaven! And that you know, that gator died. He just crawled up out of the pond and died in the parking lot! 'So weird.' Animal control came and carted him off. People say he ate trash that didn't agree with him...me..I say it was Macavity. I also know about trapeeze, diabolo, trampolines, silks, high wire, and why jockstraps should be required by law. |

You just reminded me of this story: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/1376479.stm I can't even imagine having to wear communal, work-issued underwear. Phew. |

I was just checking my site's comments and now I have:
A lot of sites have the same thing...the person is just messed up. don't let it bother you, your site is awesome |

OMG! I SO remember that! (Dies laughing) Yea wardrobe people at Disney were real crabby. I mean honestly! They got SOOOOOO Miffed at you if you complained about such things. Before that was won in the union and equity negotiations, we had numbers written in fading sharpie by people who barely understood English in our garments. we had them scan our ID cards and give us the NEW "clean" garments everyday, and we were required to shower and change. It was so humiliating at times to put on these costumes. I mean once I swear the stains in the costume were so bad, I questioned if it had EVER been washed! I think mumsy was visiting when i ranted on for what...an hour solid after that.
