Holocaust Musicals?I came to thinking the other day, are there any musicals and/or operas about the Holocaust? Music is commonly used to address things we cannot fully understand, and other horrific events have been the subject of musicals. Cabaret is the only I can think of, but even that doesn't deal directly with the Holocaust. Why?In the same vein, I was thinking what a beautiful musical Life is Beautiful [La Vita E Bella] would make. The first half is light-hearted musical comedy, the second, dramatic and romantic. I can even see it working as an opera. Is anyone familiar with the film? |

Although there are no overt references to killings in concentration camps, there are significant aspects of jewish persecution during WW2 in Cabaret. This is the closest mainstream musical I know of that depicts the horrors of that era. The Sound of Music also has WW2 references, but does not specifically depict the plight of the jewish people.

I don't know of any musicals, but I Never Saw Another Butterfly has a few dance numbers in it, or at least it did when I saw it. And it definitely addresses the holocaust and its cruelty.

There is a musical called "Ghetto" - don't know much about it but it's certainly about the Jews in WW2 - and apparently there's a new WW2 musical about Polish Jews set to open at the New London in November...

Holocaust MusicalHi. My name is Alan Cancelino. I am a composer and have written a musical called "The White Rose". It is based on a true story about a group of German university students that started a resistance movemnet against Hitler and the Nazi party. The piece has had several readings and is now going into a series of development in NYC. |

Re: Holocaust Musical
My cousin was in a brilliant regional production of the play (non-musical) version of "The White Rose" by...Lillian Garrett-Groag. I LOVED it. So moving. Is your musical based on this play? Best luck with it! |

I was recently in a a three act opera called Korczak's Orphans. it is about the true story of Janusz Korczak and months before his death. Basically, he took in thousands of Jewish orphans in a ghetto as his own.
For tose of you who know nothing about Janusz Korczak, he was very influential in proving that children sohould be treated with respect and care. Anyway, it is truly an amazing and moving piece. I was extremely lucky to play the role of Abrasha (Orphan) and have been in its first complete showing (All 3 Acts). It is a beautiful piece and very interesting to look into. |
