Hmmm......Male AND Female Urchins?

Does anyone think it'd be possible to do the show with four urchins instead of three and have two of them be played by men and the other two be played by women? Thanks!
LisaKitty

Honestly, I think that would be rather lame. The cool part about the urchins is the 3-part "60's girl group" harmony. That would be totally lost with 2 males and 2 females.

Plus, there are plenty of good male roles in this show already, but aside from Audrey, the urchins are the only roles for women.

Geez! Who pissed in your Wheaties this morning?!?!

I have my facts straight. I am neither little nor old, and I still think your idea is stupid. Not to mention illegal, according to copywright (sp?) law.

Don't ask the question if you aren't prepared for an honest answer. Especially not on this site.

Yeah, exactly, what is up with that response? I kinda thought you two knew each other and the response was a joke. Wierd....

Do I think it would be possible?

Yes, it would be possible as long as the gender of the characters is not changed.

Would the women auditioning like it?

No.

Would I like it?

No. I've always seen Little Shop as a modern version of the Macbeth tale. This makes the fact that there are 3 urchins and that they are women significant (i.e. the three witches).

I agree the urchins wouldn't work very well as men, but the comparison with Macbeth is a bit misleading as the 3 witches/hags are in some productions, played by men....For example in a production a few years back at the globe and also in a RSC adaptation they are played by men.

you guys need to take it easy.

blupanda please do not get angry at me because i totally disagree with the idea.
* the girls are 60's 3-part harmony,as mentioned and the male voice would not work, beautiful harmonies lost.
* in terms of dialouge, the urchins sound female i.e men do not talk like 60's black women they would sound a little strange saying "sing it child...sit down there seymour chiffon gon sing to ye"
* IT IS A BREACH OF LICENSING AGREEMENT! The urchins are written is as 3 females, so technically you can't change that without permission.

It is nice to be creative and interpretive sometimes, but unfortunately it doesn't really work with LSOH.

my response back was a joke haha no need to get angry anyone! thanks for all your responses, i just thought it might be an interesting idea.

If it's a joke, it's usually best to put one of these " Wink " at the end of what you said...because honestly, it came off pretty nasty...

I can't tell you how many times this: Wink has saved me! LOL!
blupanda

thanks!

No problem! Smile

Sarcasm never reads as well in type as it is in person! I've had to learn that the hard way!

LOL, I was just recently in a production of this show, and I played one of the urchins, all of us were male, and there were five of us. I personally didn't like the decision, even though it got me in the show, it didn't really have that same feeling to the audience, probably.

I saw a concert with 2 guys and 1 girl, Gary Mauer, Jodi Benson, & Ron Raines and it sounded great.
PublicFlogging

When I saw it, there were two girls and one guy. I didn't think it would be... right, but it accutally turned out pretty good. Confused
