High School Musical Auditions

The community youth theatre in my town is having High School Musical auditions for anyone 13-18, but I've only done one play with a professional company before, which was The Little Mermaid; I got the lead.

All of my other theatre experience has come from my school.

Now, I don't really like this musical, but I think the right talent could make it a fun and worth-while experience!

I've never auditioned with this company, so I'm a little lost.
They said to prepare a Broadway style song and come ready to read and dance.

I know what to wear, and I'm fine with cold reading. I am, however, having misgivings about the song.
Everything I've ever tried out for was assigned a song. I've never had to pick one myself.

The two roles I know I can try for are Gabriella and Sharpay (my first order of business is to actually watch the movie b/c those are the only ones I know).

So, any suggestions for songs for those roles?
I know "Broadway Baby" would be great for Sharpay, but that song is terribly over done. Right?

Help, please!

You should really decide firmly upon Gabriella or Sharpay because they are very contrasting characters so unless you are able to sing two songs to show a bit of both characters I would stick with just one (and personally, though I hate this musical...I think Sharpay would be the only role worth playing)

I would look at something with a similiar idea to "Broadway Baby" but something a little more poppy b/c High School Musical is all pop music. It's too late for me to think of any suggestions right now because I'm way tired, but I will try and get back to you on this.

Okay, here's my list so far:

Fame - "Let's Play a Love Scene"
The Little Mermaid 2 - "For a Moment"
Hairspray - "I Can Hear the Bells"
music is my life!!!

don't do sondheim, unless they ask you to, or if you know the accompanist knows the song. it's hard to sightread, but you could try if you wanted to go for sharpoay.

as for gabriella, do something from another disney show. there's nothing stopping you doing part of your woirld - as you know it pretty ell, why not?

oh, and don't do anything from hairspray, wicked or any other megapopular show, as the panel will have heard these loads of times!

I'd absolutely LOVE to do "Part of Your World"
but I've been under the impression it's terribly overdone.

(I agree w/ the Hairspray thing. I just can't think of many options!)
=[

So, you really think I could do Ariel's song?

Thanks for all the help

I definitely would not do Part of Your World. In fact, I'm begging you not to. Razz At an audition I went to, six out of ten girls sang that song! Ahh!!

And For A Moment from The Little Mermaid II is a great audition song. I used it once and got the part I wanted!

Pop is definatly what you need. Anything upbeat such as Hairspray(I can hear the bells, good morning baltimore) or Mamma Mia(Dancing Queen?). Both have amazing female solos.

I have a few suggestions...

For Gabriella:
Dreams to Dream from An American Tai; Fievel Goes West
If We Hold On Together
The Prayer

For Sharpay:
My Strongest Suit
Don't Rain on My Parade

Ahh!
I'm getting such diff. answers

My only problem with "For a Moment" is that it isn't technically Broadway.
The sheet only said "in the style of Broadway," though. IDK! AH!
TwirlingThruLife

Oh, and Gwen?
Can you tell me what musicals each of those songs is from?
Thanks

...I don't think that "Broadway style" necessarily means a Broadway song, but I'm not sure myself on that. I don't think it's absolutely necessary, as long as your song fits the style of the show and character you're going for.

Dreams to Dream is from An American Tail; Fievel Goes West (as I've already said above.) It's not from a musical.

If We Hold On Together is the ending song from The Land Before Time (the first one before they made all the sequals. blargh.)

Don't Rain on My Parade is from Funny Girl.

I'd suggest not to do The Prayer since it might be hard to find a place of 16 bars to mark off...or whatever your time limit is.

I would suggest slower songs for Gabriella though, and more upbeat for Sharpay when it comes to character. That's basically what I've tried to do.
music is my life!!!

btw my strongest suit is from aida
Gwen

Thank you for listing I was in a bit of a rush.
music is my life has filled in the blank for me; My Strongest Suit is from Aida. Smile

Not sure if this is too late--but my first thought for Gabriella would be Reflection from Mulan. It has much the same feel as her ballad, and similar range. PLUS it's also Disney, but not a "princess" song, and therefore more likely to slip people's minds.

That's my two cents.

I am stealing your thread, sorry. I don't feel like making another HSM audition theard. I have auditions next month for the show and I was wondering what to sing. We need something from the show and a song not from the show. I am going for the part of ryan. I am gunna sing What I've Been Looking For and this is where I need help. I don't know what song would be good for the role of Ryan.

just to give an idea about my voice, here are some of the past role's i have played:
Nick Piazza-Fame
Bobby Child- Crazy For You
Willard Hewitt-Footloose
ConverseSneaker

I Want to Make Magic from Fame? If you've played Nick, I'm assuming you know the song and are capable of singing it and it could suit Ryan.

I'd like to commendeer this thread for a moment also...
I'm auditioning for HSM in about 3 weeks, and I think i'll try for Sharpay...so, 2 things.

1. I've been considering singing 'Show Off' from Drowsy Chaperone. (The first section) and I was wondering if it was appropriate.

2. Its not written anywhere that Sharpay has to be blonde right? I'm hispanic, so should I even try?
ilovebway

I say you go for it. Even though, you'll come off as a Gabriella.
arctic_orange

The Sharpay in the show I stage managed for was a brunette--in fact, she had just played Maria in West Side Story at the same theater! I don't think it's an issue, and you can always be wigged.
Gwen

If you want Sharpay, go for it. It's not necessarily true you'll automatically be Gabriella. The girl who played her was compared with several other girls and I don't think they were all hispanic. Smile Good luck at your audition.
mercurialasaka

I did this show last year, and our Gabriella was blonde and blue eyed and our Troy was hispanic. Just goes to show that looks don't mean everything.

Guy auditioning for Ryan: You were in Footloose so do you know "I can't Stand Still"? It popped into my head because Ryan is usually a dancer. I think that might be a good option for you.

Sharpay(s): Strongest Suit is definately a top choice! I know this isn't exactly a popish song but character-wise I think I want to go to Hollywood from Grand Hotel fits the personality really well. And if you are serious belters look at "Diva" from a show called Starmites. Definately very Sharpay.

Gabriella:

Reflection-Mulan
Come out of the Dumpster- The Wedding Singer (not sure if sheet music is out for this or not)
There's a Fine, Fine Line- Avenue Q
The Story Goes On- Baby
Someone Else's Story- Chess
Think of Meryl Streep- Fame
Let's Play A Love Scene- Fame
