High School Musical at my highschool...I just learned that my high school is doing High School Musical this fall, and we're the first in the nation....... I hate high school musical!!!!!!!!! this is terrible news..... what is musical theatre coming too? |
||||
| Luc |
HA! HA! HA! | ||||
| what_the_heck013 |
It's honestly not that bad. It's bringing in a whole new generation of musical theatre fans.
| StarDreamer |
yea our community theatre just got the rights too.
| Kaaatrina |
Yeah, I don't think it's too bad either... I wouldn't mind seeing it be done in a local theater (as long as they can all sing |
||||
| beck |
i dont know how i would feel about that personally. i mean, its not that bad. but honestly, if you want your theatre to be taken seriously, doing High School Musical isnt the way to accomplish that. HSM is like a junior high show. Its not even on the same planet..galaxy even of prestigious broadway shows..and yes, high schools can pull off broadway shows, so if a high school is going to do HSM, they're dumbing themselves down.
| StarDreamer |
my thoughts exactly | ||||
| Jman383 |
Haha, actually you're far from the first in the nation. This summer I believe Stage Door Manor, the setting for the movie "Camp" (Called Camp Ovation in the movie), was/is officially the first theatre to be doing a production of the show.
As for my area, I'm hoping to do a production of it this fall, and I plan on auditioning for Ryan...haha, but yea, two theatres in my city (Syracuse, NY) are doing shows of it, both are the extended stage version. Now, as a show, let's hope it's better than the movie...not that the movie was god awful, but it wasn't glorious either. |

Can English schools get the rights for high school musical? i dont think we could but i'd love to do it cause i think its amazing! it may bring a load of new people into loving musical theatre.
| LesWickedPhantom |
my district's middle school is doing it in the spring, so I've heard.
and Jman, you're right about Stagedoor doing it, and I THINK they were the first. My friend was there for that session. (apparently, it was a load of CRAP, and the Disney Reps who came to see it were not happy with the result.) |
||||
| Jman383 |
Oh really? How interesting....
| Holly |
Wow! I've looked at that before, but saw what they've done this summer on their website - "Session 1: In partnership with MTI, campers staged a development workshop of RENT (for high schools)!" That's really interesting. |
||||
| Jman383 |
Oh really? I thought this page would just clear that up?
http://www.stagedoormanor.com/shows.html Go to the musical section: "Into the Woods, Annie, Side Show, Oklahoma, Les Miz, Miss Saigon, Pippin, Once Upon a Mattress, Perfectly Frank, Sweet Charity, Sweeney Todd, Fiddler on the Roof, Tommy, She Loves Me, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Merrily We Roll Along, Children of Eden, Side by Side by Sondheim, The World Goes Round, Sweet Charity, The Robber Bridegroom, The Music Man, Damn Yankees, Jerry's Girls, Once on this Island, Godspell, Jesus Christ Superstar, Oliver, Little Shop of Horrors, Grease, Carrie, Cabaret, Nine, Smile, Guys and Dolls, Rent, High School Musical, and West Side Story!!!" Maybe you didn't look hard enough? And if you don't believe that, just look here: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=high+school+musical+stage+door+manor |
||||
| Holly |
Er wait, was that replying to me? (Figuring since I'm the only post between yours?) I wasn't saying they didn't do it, I was just saying it's interesting that they did Rent |
||||
| Jman383 |
Oh haha... sorry I took it as you being snooty... no worries though! Haha... sorry for the confusion.... But yea, the RENT thing is pretty sketchy.... haha
| mozurkz |
ok, so we're not the first... that little pamphlet lied |
||||
| beck |
I seriously dont get how anyone can be proud of putting on a production of HSM. I mean, yeah, some of the characters are cute and require some characterization. Like, the only part of that show thats worth anything is that blonde girl who "runs the drama club" and her brother. They're witty. Everything else is so, pradictable and junior high. Like when the lead guy and lead girl sing to each other, and theres a big mixup and the girl gets all upset.
Ugh..I'm going to keep rambling on cause I don't really know how to get my point across, so I'll stop. But honestly, anyone serious about acting shouldnt be the least bit thrilled about this show. |
||||
| Baker |
High School Musical is odd in that (nearly) everybody who loves can admit that it's dorky. At least, that's how it is around here, and I've met other people who say the same. Most agree that it's so cheesy and so predictable and so dorky and so ridiculous, but that's part of what makes it addicting.
But has anyone actually seen the stage version of High School Musical? I've heard that it differs from the movie. |
||||
| Jman383 |
No you're exactly right, that IS what makes it so fun... haha, it's a change of pace, and it's not trying too hard... well in my opinion anyways, to be an amazing musical that wins the hearts of kids and adults worldwide... it's just a fluff musical made to entertain... and it does just that.
P.S. Let's HOPE it differs from the movie... in good ways at least... haha, anyone know any specifics? I do know that there is no basketball choreography in the stage show, but that's about it... |
||||
| borrowed_obsessions |
To the original poster - you have my sympathy. My high school is doing it as well, and I'm dreading it in a way, to be honest...but on the other hand, it is a fairly cute show, even if it is insanely corny and, well, Disney.
| CYTthespian |
it seems like HSM is everywhere now.
my high school is doing it in the spring, and in my acting class, we're going to be doing skits/songs from the show for our fall showcase. |

what! i love high school musical actuallt we're doing right now at my broadway school! it's a little bit different than the movie, like my character is a big part in the play but not in the movie at all. _____________________ Current roles- The Music Man (Zaneeta Shinn), High School Musical (Jackie Scott) & Parade (Mary Phagen) musicals only Previous roles- The Jungle Book (Baby Monkey) The Beauty and the Beast (feather duster) The Wizard of Oz (Lacreecia the Witch) Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Princess Starlight) Peter Pan (Liza) R&H's Cinderella (Rose the citizen) The Secret Garden (chours) The Sound of Music (Elsa Shrader) Mamma Mia (Rosie) Wicked (chours) |

if you go to www.mtishows.com and go to the HSM page and click song list there are more songs in the stage version and more characters. I think because the movie is under a 2 hour time crunch with commercials they couldn't put everything in, so the stage version will have more!
i can't wait to see the stage version. I am a proud HSM fan! wahooo! |

Re: High School Musical at my highschool...
Who in the world is Jackie Scott? I would've thought it was the hip-hop brainiac girl, but I know her name is Martha Cox... and how have you been in Wicked? I just found out our fall choir concert this year has a TV theme. (We do a theme every year - they did Broadway before I got there, then we did Motown, then last year was Music from the Movies.) So, guess what the finale is? That's right. "We're All In This Together." |
||||
| Jman383 |
Haha, I just read and it says that Jack, not Jackie appararently, and he's one of the nerds. Don't believe me, look here:

It could have been changed for this production, though. |

AHHHHH!!!! My highschool is doing it too!!! I am majorley dissapointed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love that show. I think it will be good...I actually enjoyed the movie a lot!
| Kaaatrina |
My local theatre is doing this show next year in Spring. I don't mind that much, as long as it's not cheesy or they're acting is overdone or something. But, you have to admit, the auditions in the movie are hilarious. |

it was changed for the production! |

I don't understand y everyone has something against high school musical, i love it and think it is a great and really fun show!

At 16? I thought you couldn't do high school shows unless paid if you were in the equity. So your high school is paying you to be Jackie?
Oh and about the not believing me thing, it was just a phrase. |
||||
| broadway_bound |
its not at my high school, it is at my professional broadway school, which is not an art school it is on Sat. and Fri.'s oh and i was just kidding about the not believeing thing too, lol |
||||
| ALoneWanderer |
Broadway Bound could you perhaps provide your name as evidence of the fact that you've actually done professional shows? I really highly doubt you've done everything you claim to... *Mod Edit - please do not attack the person...*
| Lazarus (Adam G) |
No, no, NO. That is NOT musical theater, it's a collection of cheap pop-songs sung by whiney-voiced teenyboppers. |

Exactly. High School Musical is anything but a great musical, but it does serve as a means of introducing real musical theatre to people, especially the younger generation. Personally, I find the show hilarious just because it's so...well, corny, and it doesn't try to hide that, you know? It accepts itself for what it is and doesn't try to be anything else. In relation to HSM, you just have to accept that it's made to be fun, not to be the next amazingly great musical...which makes it a lot more enjoyable, because you can laugh with it and at it. And there's my two cents. |
||||
| Lindso |
I like it as a movie... but the thought of it as a musical makes me weep for our future.
| krisavalon |
Haha If kids "need" High School musical as an introduction to musical theatre, then it's already over. When I was nine years old I watched Jesus Christ Superstar and damn it I enjoyed it. I didn't need goofy pop songs; I had "Gethsemane." I didn't need sports-themed pop culture choreography; I had the Jets and Sharks. I didn't need Ashley Tisdale; I had Sarah Brightman. I didn't need hollow, generic storylines; I had the plight and trials of Eva Peron. I didn't need that Disney crap; I had Beauty and the Beast! Wait a second.....scratch that last one.
Though, come to think of it, "What I've Been Looking For" is pretty goddamned catchy. |
||||
| Luc |
Wow. That's deep. | ||||
| QuicksilverTide |
If you don't want to do High School Musical you could always try and convince your director to look into Edit:Undo; it's another new musical about high school but geared toward an older audience and with more sophisticated writing. As far as I know they've only done a few DC-area performances but rumor has it they're going to do one in Germany. You should check it out.
| QuicksilverTide |
Sorry, I forgot to post the info:
www.editundo.org for basic info and reviews from USA Today, Wash. Post, LA Times, etc. info@cappies.com to ask about getting the rights and www.myspace.com/editundomusical to hear a few free song samples. |

I just got the cast list, and....... I'm on it! I'll admit, I'm happy. As long as I'm on stage, It's fine. and by the way, we are doing basketball scenes..... with basketballs. It's more like a dance done with basketballs, with video being projected onto the backdrop when we score. It's actually pretty cool. It's still an amazingly cheesy show, although I'm looking forward to doing it.
| broadway_bound |
I'M REALLY HAPPY FOR YOU!!! I just got the script as well, so if there are any questions about the show/ songs feel free to ask me And just in case anyone is wondering why it now says Taylor McKessie, it is because my part was recently changed, and I am Taylor now! _____________________ Current roles- The Music Man (Zaneeta Shinn), High School Musical (Taylor McKessie) & Parade (Mary Phagen) musicals only Previous roles- The Jungle Book (Baby Monkey) The Beauty and the Beast (feather duster) The Wizard of Oz (Lacreecia the Witch) Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Princess Starlight) Peter Pan (Liza) R&H's Cinderella (Rose the citizen) The Secret Garden (chours) The Sound of Music (Elsa Shrader) Mamma Mia (Rosie) Wicked (chours) Hairspray (chours) |

Are there any additional songs for Taylor and Chad? I always feel like they get ripped off... Troy, Gabriella, Sharpay, and Ryan do all the singing (not counting Stick to the Status Quo or the pathetic-but-hilarious auditions). I thought it'd be cool to have a Darbus vs. Coach Bolton duet as well.
| mozurkz |
I don't know, I havn't got the script yet.
| broadway_bound |
yes Taylor and Chad have two duets and some solo parts in different songs like start of something new, it's really kool!! |
||||
| what_the_heck013 |
Is "Stick to the Status Quo" the first act finale? It's the best song in the show, and I've always thought it was the best song to end the first act. |
||||

Your School- High School Musical
My School- Into the Woods and Chicago I believe my ghetto fabulous school wins? Christina |
||||
| mozurkz |
Yeah, we have wizard of Oz in the spring. We were going to do Chicago indstead of HSM, but no, all this first high school in the nation crap. Trust me, just because i auditioned, does NOT mean I like the show.
| Baker |
In HSM, there are 2 different types of songs - those that are planned (Start of Something New, What I've Been Looking For, Bop to the Top, Breaking Free, etc.) and those that break out spontaneously a la a regular musical (Stick to the Status Quo, We're All In This Together, When There Was Me aand You, etc.) A Taylor and Chad spontaneous song makes sense because it wouldn't be them actually singing... it's just like them talking in real-life, but for the purposes of making it a musical, they sing it. OK, I think that makes more sense in my head than in words... |
||||
| Ingénue |
Oh God...I sympathize.. Good Lord I hate High School Musical as well. I do believe however (in my humble opinion) that it's nto a true musical. It's a movie with songs... like Moulin Rouge (though I love Moulin Rouge)Our school contemplated doing it but our choir revolted and demanded that we shall not do it. I think we might do Little Women or West Side Stroy but I'm not sure which way it will go though. Hello Dolly has also been throw up in the air as a suggestion. But back to HSM, I cannot stand that show and I do wish you the best of luck with that. A school nearby me is doing HSM. I plan on attending so I can laugh. Please high school musical fans do not kill me for posting that I hate this. *shrug* |
||||
| -ching.ho- |
My sisters middle school is doing it this fall, I honestly think its a good idea. Its modern and fresh but still bad . My two cents.
| mozurkz |
Hey, everyone, many weeks later, I'm now doing tech for HSM. Right now, I'm at the theater in-between scenes. the stage version is as crappy as the movie, but it doesn't matter, It's still fun. On another unrelated note, the school chose the play I wrote for this falls student production. Back on HSM, to answer your questions, there are two new songs. some other minor things have changed, especially 'status quo' which now has an extra verse with different lyrics. We start preforming on the 4th and we're running for 3 weekends. It's REALLY fun, even if it is a rotten show.

I was Troy in HSM World PremiereHey... lots of attention on HSM still and the debate continues. I played Troy at Stagedoor Manor this summer and we all had a blast. It's actually funny that so many people say they don't like the show but we had tons of people begging and crying to be in the show and there were 12 other shows being performed at the same time. My take on it is this; there are lots of people in this world that are NEVER exposed to theatre and this MAY peak their interest..and that's a great thing. It is a very good show. Disney guys that came and watched, DID like the show. If anyone does force themselves to see the HSM tour, our production is in Disney's program. We are also featured in the Lifestory special edition of Zac Efron just released. Also we were featured in Variety in Sept. The folks at Disney are great and have been awesome to work with. They did a fabulous job converting this to stage!!!! If anyone has a chance to audition for the show, try it..then you'll really know if you like DOING it or not but hey that's the beauty of the business, we all have our favorites. Have fun with the show for all that are doing it. You won't regret it. |
||||
| Dancediva19 |
My deepest sypathy for anyone whose school is doing HSM I thought that Disney could have been a waaaay better job. The movie musical Newsies, which is one of my favorite musicals ever, was also Disney AND directed by the same guy (Kenny Ortega) so i was VERY disappointed with HSM. As to the idea that it might spark interest in non-musical people, that might be true, but they might expect the same kind of shallow storyline when they watch a true musical with a more intense plot.
| Baker |
I think some people forget though that Disney didn't make this movie with the intention of making a big bang. It was an idea, they made it - any interviews with any of the actors will tell you how surprised they are at the success of High School Musical. It wasn't intended to be the best thing ever - just a cute, entertaining movie, which is exactly what it is.
| Eponine93 |
What people don't realize about High School Musical is that it draws kids to musical. Musical. Not musicals in the plural. One musical. High School Musical.
In fact, it draws kids away from musicals. All the kids are all like "Real shows are boring, I don't want to do Oklahoma (the other option at my school) it's lame and boring, lets do High School Musical instead!" And there goes their chance to become aquainted with a real piece of theatre. |

I am going through the same ordeal at my school. This upcomming year we will do a show for the first time in about a decade...many people insist on HMS...but I'm directing and none of the people on the student board for the drama club like it either |
||||
| The Drama Queen |
I'm so glad our directors have sense, as many in America do not right now. One of the students suggested we do it next year and our director was like "No......." My friend is playing Ryan in HSM right now and he was telling me how the director doesn't even like it, he was just pressured by the students and schoolboard to do it!
| fatimalex |
does anybody know how casting goes as far as vocal range??
i will be auditioning for this show during the summer. i did my research on casting info. and the three cites i checked only gave brief character descriptions. i'm 16. a mezzo-soprano [belter]. hispanic [so ethnically, i probably fit gabriella... i don't know about vocal range though]. strong singer. dance well. and fair at acting. and. here is a visual.
if that helps any... mmm. if you could help in any way... that would be lovely. :] |
||||
| BEaSTARandSINGlove |
yeah i also have an audition for hsm coming up so i've been doing some research on it. i agree that there's not much info out there about voice parts...but i say judging from that description you would fit as gabriella.. gabriella never goes into her head voice..she belts everything..and i would say shes either a high alto or a mezzo. as for the dancing, the leads in this show all don't dance as much as the chorus members. gabriella dances in "we're all in this together" and a little bit in the song that her and troy do for the callbacks ( i can't remember the name of it now). and i would say that the acting part of gabriella isn't very difficult at all. i hope this helped a little bit! |
||||
| BEaSTARandSINGlove |
i posted this in the audition song sticky...but i figured i'd post it here too.. i know like all you guys on here hate high school musical... and i'll just say i'm not completely in love with it myself...but i'm auditioning for it anyways..so i just have a question about my audition...hopefully u guys can help me
i have an audition for high school musical coming up in about a month.. i am really looking to get sharpay...does any1 have a suggestion for an audition song? i am an alto...i am best at belting..but i can be a legit. mezzo...anyways i need an uptempo alto song thats not from hsm to try out with ..any ideas?? |
||||
| fatimalex |
haha. i am completely in the same position. i honestly don't understand why other people say it's so great. but the company who i'm auditioning for has a very good reputation for summer theatre. so i figure i might as well just do it. :] thanks for the help. eeee. i am excited for the audition. :] for sharpay's character you should probably do something more annoying and prima donna-ish. haha. you might want to try something from The Lady of the Lake in Spamalot. her character is completely a prima donna and she sings anything from opera, pop, to scatting. since high school musical is more of a contemporary, pop-styled show i think this fits. or. 'a trip to the library' from she loves me. it's cute, boy crazy, and can get annoying [which also fits sharpay]. haha. and if none of those suit you, you might want to check this: http://www.musicaltheatreaudition.com/shows/1showlists/popstyle.html it lists pop-styled shows that could be good for the audition. hope that helps! |
||||
| WcSinger13 |
I tried out for HSM at a community theatre the other day and I got callbacks but I don't even know if I want to be in it because it's def. a lil kid show and so I didn't get 1st grop callbacks cause of my looks. I like adult leads.
| tappinactress |
Yeah, my high school is putting on this show as a summer performance. It's mainly just to get some money coming in to support our drama department. Although we all fee the same way about the show (it's lame, and really not that exciting) we're all still auditioning and just gonna have as much fun as we can, lol. I'm auditioning as well, probably for either Gabriella, Sharpay, or Monique. And I really don't think the ethnicity thing has to play a part, right??
