Hiding Flaws/Deformities During an Audition-URGENT

Hi guys,

Okay- so here goes with a really personal (and I might add SENSITIVE) question.

Okay, so my friends convinced me to buy a beautiful summer dress for my audition tomorrow for Pirates of Penzance- I am auditioning for a modernized version where the daughters are all going to be extremely girly secretaries. The problem is that I have a condition that leaves my ankles permanently swollen and this dress hits basically at my calves with an aline cut- so it is practically POINTING to the flaws. I have not worn anything that shows my ankles since the condition surfaced, around 8 years ago- so this would be MAJORLY different and I feel seriously self conscious about it. We're talking alot of swelling too- they don't really look like ankles from the front, let's put it that way (if you guys can't give a good answer without seeing a pic, I will post one but if you can without a pic I would really prefer it)

My question is- should I wear this dress because it suits the characters I'm auditioning for (Edith/Kate/Isabel) and looks great everywhere else on me, or do you think that wearing a dress that shows this deformity might make the auditioners focus on that flaw and not on my good qualities?

HELP!!!!

Thanks for any advice you can give.

If you get cast, they're going to see it eventually, right? Best to be up front.

that is true, especially if they want the character to wear a dress for the show.

I'm just wondering what might sway the auditioners more- dressing more closely to the character, or showing off a not-so-attractive flaw. I could always wear dress pants, so the option to hide it is definitely there. I might get lucky and be totally off base in what I think they're looking for-they may not have dresses in mind for these characters at all (as unlikely as I fear that is, there's always hope Very Happy ).

If you feel "extremely self conscious" in it, then don't wear it. You want to feel comfortable and confident!

I wouldn't wear it. It will distract you. It will distract them.

If you believe this may keep you from getting cast, by all means don't draw attention to it. You're already trying to dress to look right for the part so it is clear that you understand the importance of "look." Don't sabotage yourself by drawing attention to your flaws.

We've all got flaws. We've just gotta learn how to hide them/deal with them/utilize them!

^^^^^Agreed with marymag.

I totally agree.
I would wear the dress everywhere else to get used to it! I'm sure they seem worse to you than to everyone else! So yeah, wear the dress to the grocery store and all that good stuff, but not to the audition. You should be comfortable so that the best of you shines through!

In a show like "Pirates", you'll most likely be wearing a full length dress anyway...

I would wear a full length skirt with a nice top...

If you're uncomfortable with what you're wearing, it will show. NEVER wear anything that makes you uncomfortable...

Don't wear it.
If you're self consciouse about it, it will be obvious to them. Plus it could take away from your performance if you're constantly thinking about your ankles.

I've come to terms myself with the fact that I should dress nice and neutral and comfortable. The talent will speak for itself.

The dress will not get you the role. You will.

Thank you so much for all of your advice, guys! I just got back from the audition and I DID NOT wear that dress... I ended up finding a full length dress at the last minute and was complimented on it by the panel. The other one just made me too self conscious... I know its probably just me, but it just made me feel better not having to worry about whether they are focusing on things other than my talent.

Now I just have to wait to hear back about the part. *crosses fingers*

Thank you again!

*hugs* Great to hear! Smile

Glad you compromised and found another good dress.

I'm waiting to hear back on a callback for Seussical myself. *crosses fingers too* Please Horton Please!
