Fyedka is the Russian soldier that falls in love with Chava. He's charming and he is kind. He really cares for her. I remember when I played Chava we were able to have some good moments for using facial expressions and body language to express the things we couldn't say out loud. Being a Christian, what he and Chava do is really huge. It has a bigger impact than what the other daughters do. Fyedka has a maturity that the other suitors lack. Motel is basically a scared little boy and Perchik is basically a hot headed know it all.
If you can sing it, you should be the one that gets to sing the cool Russian solo in "To Life."
Don't be so upset about getting Fyedka! When you have a director that is looking at acting ability over singing ability they'll choose the better actors for Fyedka and Chava. At least that's how it worked with my first director for FOTR. My Fyedka was a little upset that his boyfriend got Perchik over him, but the director told me, "Well then he shouldn't have been the better actor. It wasn't that he couldn't sing or act the part of Perchik, it was because I needed the better actor in the part of Fyedka." It was the same for my role of Chava. At first I thought I did something wrong at the auditions, but I realized, where acting is concerned, that Chava is the best female role in the show and I would rather play her over the other female roles any day!
When we gave the performances we left a lasting impression on the audience. In fact people were impressed and wished that we had had more stage time. We didn't hear that about anyone else, so think of this as a great opportunity to take a small role (as far as stage time) and really stand out.

More importantly, Fyedka is a mensch - a decent human being, who in the end refused to do the Tsar's dirty work. When he first met Chava - in Motel's tailor shop in stage productions, on a road in the movie - he shooed away Sasha and the others who were harassing Chava. Clearly he meant business; none of them hung around to question or argue with him. With some difficulty at first, he then broke the ice with Chava.
He very pointedly announced to Tevye at departure from Anatevka: "We cannot stay among people who can do such things to others" and "Some people are driven away by edicts, others by silence". He would not stand for the cold shoulder from Tevye, and obviously got through to him. When it was almost too late, Tevye muttered under his breath: "G-d be with you", relayed by Tzeitel, thus possibly leaving the door open for a possible future reconciliation. Fyedka showed himself to be the polar opposite of the Constable, the one Russian Tevye had always trusted, but who turned out to be almost totally unprincipled (that's another story).
Raymond Lovelock played Fyedka very well in the movie, almost as if he were born to the role.

Fyedka and Chava is my favorite of the three daughter-lover stories. It is the most unlikely and yet heart felt. the overcome the most obsticles and to me, really steal the show. Congrats.
