Hey you! Yes, you! Come, help me!I did post this in the auditions thread, but I only got one response (from the awesome Jazzy).Alrighty, So I'm attending a week long intensive Musical Theatre camp a month from now. On the list of things to bring are "a monlogue and vocal selection (both should be age appropriate) that you would like to work on- Preferably pieces that you haven't worked on before." So I'm looking for suggestions of songs and/or plays I can find monologues from. I did the camp last year and I know that a) they don't like monologue books b) don't do any overdone Shakespeare of ANYTHING from The Diary of Anne Frank. About moi: I'm 13, but look around 16. Usually I'm better at somedic stuff than dramatic (with monologues at least) and though I have been cast as a few different types, my favorite/strongest is the crazy one....(example, my character in Acting Out basically had a hilarious panic attack that is still quoted with me and my friends) As for the song, I would like something uptempo, (as I get tired of love-obsessed ballads), but am open to a ballad, and it doesn't matter if the show's really popular or not, as long as everyone and his mother aren't singing the song. My voice = legit mezzo. I enjoy telling myself I can belt, but in reality, I have a very nice mix at best. the range is Low D (right under the low E in Buenos Aires) To a high A flat. (If I'm really warmed up and relaxed, the B above that as well.) I usually have trouble with using chest voice on the E-F right above middle C.. My tiny rep that is sure to expand: Anyone Can Whistle As If We Never Said Goodbye Castle on a Cloud A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes I'll Know (performed at recital) Far From The Home I Love (performed at recital) Matchmaker + (have sorta worked on) Buenos Aires ---- Sorry for the somewhat disorginization of that post, I was sort of writing what popped into my head, but I think I covered all of the usual questions one would be asked after saying "I am auditioning for ____. What should I sing?" Thanks in advance for yo-----wait. no. not putting that. but really, I know everyone here is awesome. |

ya know, you shouldnt have a problem with the song part at all because there are plenty of mezzo uptempo songs- so get listening! (i love listening to accuradio- the broadway one- while i'm cleaning because every so often you hear a song that would work for you)
as far as monologues go, check out Catholic School Girls...i'm currently doing the show...there are tons of monologues in it. A couple of them are over-used but not too many. I love Elizabeth's monologue on her grandmother's death. Theres also a couple cute/funny ones |

okay, I've been researching songs for a good while now, and still cannot come up with anything that will be great. What I'm really aiming for in the song is to perform it at the "recital" at the end of the week, as only about 1/3 of the people get to. And last year, there were some really good singers that didn't get to perform, mostly becuase their song wasn't memorable enough.
The problem is, I'm going into tech for Seussical, then have a few days, and then I leave for camp.....and I really need to have my song before those few days in order to practice it. More suggestions would really be appreciated. edit: I am conducting my own monlogue search, and its going slightly better. *sigh of relief* |

As for fast tempo comedic songs. You could try.
May not be quite age appropraite but funny songs 'I can't say no' from Oklahoma Adelaide's Lament from guys and dolls "I know things now" -Into the woods (most age appropriate) "The Love of My Life" from Brigadoon I don't know the show but maybe something that Lucy sings from 'You're a Good Man Charlie Brown' I think that the first 2 songs maybe on the overdone audition list. If you are worried about using these songs for future audtions skip them. I am by no means an expert but I do hope this helped. |

For a monologue, look at Eleemosanary. The daughter who wins the spelling bee.
What about "The Girl I mean to be" from the secret garden? |

^^hello helpful website. Its a database of monologues from plays, where you can search by basically any aspect of the monologues. However, you have to join and add a monologue to the database before you can see the full text....but I found the Eleemosanary there. |
