Herman in Sweet Charity

I'm hoping to go for this role, but I dont know the show that well, I've been checking it out on YouTube etc and keep researching, Im probably going to get the movie.

How should Herman be portrayed? I was planning to do him with a really gravelly gruff voice, but the other versions Ive seen clips of, he seems to just be normal sounding, I dunno.

And as for 'I love to cry at weddings', its going to be tricky to stay in character voice with that one, especially when the soprano bits hit, Im nervous of those as it is!

So basically, any help offered would be most welcome!

In my production last year our Herman was not nasty ENOUGH.

He has to be agressive with the girls...after all. He is their pimp.

The actor every night would lose his nerve and ad lib (which is ok) but he wouldn't retain that horrible-ness that Herman needs!

When 'I Love To Cry At Weddings,' is sung, it should be a contrast to this nasty character the audience have seen throughout the show so far. I think the gravelley voice is a good idea....many videos on youtube seem to be impersonating the NYC accent the film version Herman seems to do. Which is alright I suppose but not to my taste!

Good luck.

And you will get the high notes! Practice makes perfect Wink
music is my life!!!

you've gotta be mean to the 12 girls and be able to show that in every scene - but he's just a feisty new-yorker, so when he can he relaxes. hence, i love to cry at weddings. i was in sweet charity at the end of 2006 and i noticed our herman wasn't as bad as he could have been.
as for the higher parts, you could always go into falsetto - it is meant to be funny, afterall

Very Happy
