Here's a question folks.....Right, I've been reading all of the helpful tips here about auditions and how the accompanist is a key part to your audition.
I did a musical in July and I took a risk, I accompanied myself. I played the piano and sang 'Gethsemane'.
I did get the lead male role, but I don't know how this would transfer onto the west end??
Your thoughts??

Honestly, I think it takes away from the emotion of this particular piece...when you are behind a piano, you can't be as free with your movements/focus...It may sound great, but to a panel who is casting you, I think it would be a big mistake, acting-wise...

Yes, it certainly can hamper any physical acting, I only did it because I didn't have any sheet music so I just worked it out to the CD and did it that way. It's a shame though, I would be alot more confident if I was accompanying myself

To help with your confidence in the pianist, it is possible sometimes to find out who that person will be and then try and get a couple of practice sessions in with them before the auditions. Of course it will probably cost a buck or two, but can be very helpful.

I did that for a recent audition and it helped tremendously! I called the theater, asked who was accompanying, asked for contact information, the emailed the guy ASAP for a 30min session. It did cost me about $30 though.
