Help! Here's the deal. I'm auditioning for a community production of Into the Woods tomorrow. I'm desperate for the role of the Witch, although I would also be happy for a Step-Sister. I've been working on characterization for the Witch and her songs and such since Oscar night, when I found out that the ITW was the summer musical. I feel sure that I could do a good job with the role. Enter the problem.
The character sheet that listed the general ages of the roles only went up last week. For the Witch, it said 30-40. I'm nineteen. I'm very tall and low-voiced, though, and so can play a bit older, but I doubt I could even pass for twenty-five. I've been taking the prep classes offered by the music director, whom I've worked with a bit before. We were working on parts of "Ever After" last week, and after I did the Witch's "I was perfect" bit he said that I did it better than Vanessa Williams in the revival (not saying much, though). After the last class last Saturday, I asked him if it would be realistic to still audition for the Witch, or if I was just to young. His response was immediate and positive that I should still give it a go. Enter my need for help.
It seems that the musical director is willing to consider me. However, would I just be irritating the main director by auditioning for a role when I'm ten to twenty years younger that specified? I know that I could handle the singing, and definitely the acting. Is my age too much of a barrier, though? Help me!
