Help w/ Running Auditions?

Okay. This is my first time directing, and I need some help.
I know how it works from an acting standpoint, but what do you look for in a dancing audition? A singing auditon? Do you look for overall quality, or try cast per character? Should it span over several days?

Just... advice please!

Okay, is it Cat's you are directing?

I would start with the singing auditions, then teach them all a dance. I look for how quickly they learn things during the dance auditions, and how they handle themselves.

Yes. It's CATS.
Thankyou.

As an experienced musical director, I can tell you a few things to look out for when it comes to Singing auditions.

Firstly, opheliarose is right.. start with the singing. If you're doing auditions for CATS.. it's going to be unlikely that anyone will show up without prior dancing experience.

When it comes to singing.. you're looking for a good range.. if you can play piano.. just plunk out single notes.. the ranges should be like this:
Soprano: C to HighA
Alto: A to C above middle C
Tenor: low D to A
Bass: low E to middle C

Remember not to just look for a dazzling voice.. but good acting in the audition song. CATS is a very emotional show at times, and your leads have to be great actors, as well as singers and dancers.

Have fun! Message me/Email me/IM me if you need anything else! I'd be glad to assist!

Thanks,

When I directed my first show last year, here is the advice I got from a seasoned director . . . 1st look for the VOICE, then the LOOK--for Cats I would say the dancing might even come before the look. THEN, you help them become the actor you want them to be--it's the easiest part to mold. You can't change a voice or look in 8 weeks, but you can teach a lot of dance and acting.

As for dance auditions, I've usually done it in groups--teach a routine and see how they handle it--you can at least see how they look when they move and get an idea of how teachable they might be.
