Help please? So I wrote this drama called "The Black Raft". I tried giving it to my school to originate it, but because of the content, it can't be shown. It's about a girl who is constantly abused by her mother.
Because I can't do it at my school, I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about who I can shop it to? My director read it and liked it, and everyone else (the people I wanted to cast in it) who read it liked it.. so I've already gotten the play itself out there, but I'm not sure if I should give it to my civic theatre (because I want creative control) or who else to give it to...
Thanks!

Could I have a look at it if you don't mind? Sounds interesting.

You can always send it out to random community theatres and see if anyone bites. When I finish my script, that is what I am going to do. I wouldn't even make anyone buy the rights, it would just be neat to know someone is out there doing it.
We recieve random scripts occasionally at my community theatre and we actually did one of the shows this past summer.

Thanks!
I think I'm actually going to send it to our community theatre. I'm just worried about creative control.

Did you/do you think you could get it copyrighted? That might be a good idea so you have creative control and your work is protected from plagiarism

The Park Theatre is very expensive to rent out. Much more than our PAC.
Or.. we can just put it on in your basement..

Just so you know, there are no formal requirements for copyright anymore. Just writing the script copyrights it. You only need to register a copyright if you're suing to enforce it. Still, it's a good idea to put a copyright mark and year on it just to remind people that it's yours.

I know there aren't, and I'm going to put a copyright mark on it.
Thanks!

Just a little tip. The more gung-ho you are (as the playwright) on "creative control" the less likely a director will be to work with you. It's a collaboration. I'm not saying you aren't a good director..but I'm saying.. sometimes another director might have a GREAT vision.. a GREAT interpretation that you never even thought of. By no means should you be absent from the rehearsal process. But allow an ensemble to form...work with the director..not as the director.
