Help me outI'm trying to convince my acting teacher, who has directed most of the shows that I've been in, to do Into the Woods.
I'm very familiar with the music from the show (I've got the OBC, revival, and OLC recordings and have the songs pretty much memorized), but there are a few things I need to ask to figure out if we can do this.
*Can the set be done very, very basically? I've been trying to find pictures of sets, but everything looks so complicated. We don't have much room on the stage or backstage, and the theatre is rented, so we don't always have many options as to what to do.
*Cinderella’s Father is only seen very shortly, right? Is he usually casted in another role as well?
*I think we probably have enough girls who can sing, but I don't think we have many guys who can sing that well (even though they're very talented actors). How many of the male roles are actually very vocally demanding? (We've managed to do Once Upon a Mattress, Li'l Abner, and Ameritage with having very few guys who are great singers, but I'm not sure about this show...)

Have you tried set boards? That's what my school does, and it seems to work quite well.

I'm not sure about "usually," but I'm sure that role could be double cast very easily. If you have a large potential cast, though, you might wank to leave it as is.

The sets for Into the Woods can be very simple. You basically only need 1 main set, which is the forest. There are several other little things such as the baker's house, Jack's house, and Cinderella's house. There is also Rapunzel's tower, and Cindy's mother's tree. These 2 latter items may stay onstage all the time, whereas the three former houses only appear in the opening scenes of both acts.
As far as Cindy's father playing another character, most roles can be played by only 1 actor. For example, the actor that plays the narrator often plays the mysterious man. The actor who plays the wolf often plays Cinderella's prince. The only vocally demanding male role is Jack. I would consider his song ("Giants in the Sky") one of the most difficult. The Baker and the two princes must also have excellent voices. The wolf needs only a rich bass/baritone voice.

We totally cut out Cinderella's father and deleted the two lines he said or gave them to her stepmom.
