Here are some clues:

3 good singing African americans, 2 are mother and daughter, and another is a big strong singer.

Large cast but no children

5 female leads
5 male leads

ensemble show

if you have any ideas what this musical is let me know I might have more clues tommorow! Thanks d'oh! Confused
WcSinger13

I forgot to mention this:

It's controvesial.

Has a few make out scenes

more of an adult type show PG13

Drama in the 2cd act.

for high school.
BroadwayBaby0202

Ragtime...except it does have children but I guess they can be changed into teens if you wanted.
PappyCat

My first guess was Hairspray, but that doesn't really fit the dramatic 2nd act.
norayouadora

^I was thinking Hairspray, too...
BroadwayBaby0202

Ooh, good call!! Yeah, I'm going to change my vote to Hairspray, haha!

But there's no mother/daughter. It fits everything else perfectly, though.

I have no idea, though.
flying_pigs

Porgy and Bess?
PappyCat

Why I think it's Hairspray:

3 good singing African americans, 2 are mother and daughter, and another is a big strong singer. - Motormouth and Lil Inez, and Seaweed.

Large cast but no children
- No kids, unless you count Inez.

5 female leads - Tracy, Amber, Penny, Velma, Maybelle

5 male leads
- Link, Corny, Wilbur, Edna, Seaweed

ensemble show
- Nicest Kids in town and the negro day chorus. Lots of good ensemble parts.

It's controvesial. - Deals with Racism

Has a few make out scenes
- Won't go all the waaaaay but I'll go pretty far! (I don't know if there are actual 'Makeout scenes' in Hairspray, but there are quite a few kissing scenes.)

more of an adult type show PG13
- After watching it for a second time a couple of days ago, I realized how suggestive the show is! A lot of the jokes are rather sexual!

Drama in the 2cd act. - I don't know where this would come from. It IS a bit more of a serious tone during the second act.

My two cents.
BroadwayBaby0202

^ I concur.

I noticed this a lot too the second time I saw it! I definitely picked up on the whole Corny/Brenda relationship after "Nicest Kids in Town." Oh, and "Hey baby, looks like you could use a stiff one." hahahaha

New clue: Better learn your alma mater
norayouadora

Whaa? Is there an alma mater in Hairspray? It's been a couple years since I saw it (and I've only seen it once) but I don't remember there being anything like that. In fact the only show with an alma mater that I can think of atm is Grease, lol. Unless it's a play on words. What is the name of your school's alma mater?
PappyCat

Alma mater...So, a show about High school, maybe?
Luc

It sounds like GREASE! to me, except for the black part... Think

Sure does.

1.) Can be done with a VERY large cast-- ours was +100!
2.) 5 female leads: Rizzo, Sandy, Jan, Frenchie, Marty
3.) 5 male leads: Kenickie, Danny, Doody, Sonny, Roger
4.) There are many ensemble numbers
5.) Rather controversial... raised a few eyebrows at my school
6.) Definitely a few make-out scenes
7.) The movie was rated PG-13, I would give the show the same rating
8.) Many high schools do it
9.) Drama in the second act, especially with Rizzo's "pregnancy"
10.) The show opens with the songs "Rydell Alma Mater" and "Alma Mater Parody"

What's with the black part, though? None of the roles are specifically written for black people (though they could easily be performed by people of any race). And as far as I know, there are no mother-daughter pairings in the show.
WcSinger13

Some one told me it's like love me tender so they're thinking something about elvis????
kitty17794

All Shook Up is the only musical I can think of about Elvis...
norayouadora

Oooh, and All Shook Up does have a black mother/daughter pair--Sylvia and Lorraine. Innnteresting... But it's not exactly a controversial show. Hmm. Think

May I ask why you're trying to guess this show? Is your teacher giving you clues to the show your school is doing next year, or what?
WcSinger13

Yep.
Eponine93

I would say Godspell, but unless it's a very unique production, I doubt there's a make-out scene... Too bad the mother daughter think doesn't fit either...
i'm_back

What is it? Do you know yet? Hairspray seems like the best guess.

but wait, are the rights for Hairspray even out yet????
PappyCat

I don't think they are out yet.
norayouadora

I believe the amateur rights for Hairspray are going to come out sometime soon... There was a thread about it not too long ago. Hold on.

http://musicals.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=57554

So I guess it would be somewhat feasible that a high school could do the show in the near future.
giggles24

I'm dying for the rights to come out! Do you know if the movie will delay them?
norayouadora

^ Oy. Good point. To be honest, that hadn't even occurred to me... I'm probably mistaken, but weren't the rights for Chicago much more restricted after the movie came out? Though I'm sure they're going to be extremely limited even when they do first come out.
Dennis Galahad

My mind immeadatly jumped to "The Color Purple" for some odd reason, but after thinking it over, I'm leaning towards Hairspray also. Dang this is a toughie.

New Clue...

Drag yourself to school.

All shook up is what the chorus girls think it is - dresses in drag?!
Jekkienumber24601

? Huh ?
Anno_Domini

Oh, now it has got to be Hairspray.

"Drag yourself to school" -- sounds like Edna to me: she's played by a man in drag; her character is that of the mother of a high school student, and "drag yourself to school" is certainly something a mother would say.

So far, all the clues point to Hairspray
dantheman

Ummm...yeah. So when do we find out for sure?
WcSinger13

Idk but we all still think it's All Shook Up... I'll have a new clue in like July...
