Help Me Choose A Book please?Ok, so a few days ago, my English (10th grade honors) teacher handed out a list of books and told us to choose one to read for our outside reading assignment. I've narrowed it down to a few that seem pretty good from the descriptions she gave us, but I don't know any thing else about them, so I was hoping I could get some opinons from here, considering it seems that most people here really know their literature. So basically, I would like the book to be somewhat easy for the average American 15/16 year old, athough not so easy that it's intelligence-insulting... tehe. Right now, I'm leaning towards "Ivanhoe", because it sounds interesting from the description I was given: A romantic adventure set in the days of knights and chivalry. But I would really like to know what y'all think... |

I myself am partial to 'Pride and Prejudice', but a lot of people find Austen hard to understand.

Rebecca!
Its such a brilliant, dark and lush romantic suspense story...you'll love hating Mrs. Danvers and fall in love iwth Maxim DeWinter! |

Avoid Ivanhoe. Walter Scott has a gift for making swordfights, narrow escapes, daring rescues, and bloody mass slaughters into some of the most mind-numbingly boring prose ever comitted to paper.
I'd probably go wtih Pride and Prejudice, if I were you (though I've never read Rebecca). |

Re: Help Me Choose A Book please?
That's sort of the same reason why I read Ivanhoe. I picked the most interesting sounding book from a class list. My impression is that it is a good guy book, chilvalry, honor, knights, fighting, ...etc. You can read it on-line here http://www.online-literature.com/walter_scott/ivanhoe/ or at least start it and see if you like it. The site also has posts with other people's opinions about the book. |

Rebecca is great. Daphne du Maurier is really good with words.

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the help. I think I'm going to read Rebecca for the school assignment, just because it appeals to me more, but, because of all the encouragement towards Pride and Prejudice, I'm going to read that in my spare time as soon as I'm done with the school assignment. Thanks again! |
