Help choosing!!!ive never gotten a lead role so far...cuz im a bass...
next year in Highschool is my senior year...
Freshman Year i was Scary Uncle Vladmir in a funny unknown show called Dear Edwina...it was a great role since it was supposed to be an Opera like song...
Sophmore i was the Rabbi in Fiddler on the Roof...the director told me i was going to be Tevye but she decided to give to another guy cuz he was a senior...(she always puts seniors first...)
this year we did Seussical (which hysterical and cool btw)...i was The Mayor of Whoville...
she wanted to do Grease next year but the school district is too afraid of getting sued by angry parents...
right now shes asking for suggestions for next year...she says if finds a show thats good for a bass she'll do it...but she doesnt know any...figures...
she says what shes looking at for possibilties...
Guys n' Dolls...theres no way shell do it...we have a ton of female performers...not enough girl parts in it...
High School Musical...*shudder*...yes she is THAT stupid...(if you dont know it...trust me...you dont want to...)
and Wizard of Oz which is almost as bad...eewww...
ive worked hard to be a good singer...im the only bass shes ever had who went to State Solo and Ensemble as Soloist...i scored I,I,II...bleh...
(but i did have a duet with a tenor that came in 2nd place...HAH!)
i was a soloist at the Heritage Festival in London...
and i was voted best male singer in my chamber chior sophmore and this year...(she still gave the department award to another bass just cuz he was a senior...even though ive beaten him soundly every single time ive competed against him)
my highest note is an F and my lowest note is a low C...(go on a keyboard from middle C till you get to the next C)...
my voice teacher says im a freak for being able to sing so low...
i guess i sound a little arrogant...but ive never been the best at anything...all my work payed off...
and now this...i have worked too long and hard for my senior musical to be the stupid Wizard of Oz...its my turn to get senior preference now...
so please tell me a musical with a bass main character...i cant find any kind of place that names the voice type of the parts...and i dont know many musicals
why does the world of musicals despise the Bass so much...im sick of being told...
"Hey Josh...youd be good as that role...but i guess its a tenor role so you cant do it..."
please help me...i dont wanna be in the background anymore...

hey man, I'm pretty much in the exact same boat as you, only my soph experience was Harold Hill, not Tevye, speaking of which, the music man has a great baritone lead, not bass, but its deffly in your range
other shows:
King and I - King Mongkut (doesn't sing much, but gr8 role)
Camelot - Sir Lancelot (technically Arthur's the lead, but whatev)
Sweeney Todd - Sweeney (but if u cant do grease, than well...)
South Pacific -Emile de Becque (Bassiest bass lead there is, prolly best op)
Pirates of Penzance-Pirate King (technically 2nd biggest part, but its close)
Rocky Horror - Dr. FnF (yah, i know u cant do this show, but its always been a dream of mine to do)
B&TB - Beast or Gaston (disney can be fun, regardless of HSM)
Carousel - Billy Bigelow (god, I hope we dont do this, but i know someone at our school who would KICKA$$ at this role
Jesus Christ Superstar - Judas (if you really can sing really low and high, you could drop the high parts an octave and just straight beast normal range stuf down an octave...oh yeah...and Judas is definately the lead)
Oh yeah...can you act your way out of a paper bag? cuz some of these roles require some serious acting
but yeah, any R+H show will have a bass-baritone lead
i'd prolly go South Pacific...check out "Some Enchanted Evening"

Lancelot i am thinking for a Bass would be too high......because i am a light baritone and i sometimes struggle with "if ever i would leave you" if im not warmed up properly.........and as for Billy Bigelow.......that would be too high for a bass........great part tho!!........erm i have told you wot u wont be able to do but i cant tell you wot u can do lol.........Frank Butler (Annie Get your Gun), "Wild" Bill Hitchcock(Calamity Jane), Adam (7 Brides 4 7 Brothers).................But if i were you I would go for Emile inb South Pacific!
We Barritones need to stick together!! lol

oops...anyways i agree completely | Well gentlemen I think you shouldnt fret. In highschool your voice is just underdeveloped. I had alot of training in highschool and hated musical theatre because I thought it gave roles to tenors and baritones which sucked because I felt that was just another way to categorize a higher singing part that you might as well call tenor. I thought Basss got jipped. BUt I learned later on that I wasnt even a true Bass. In fact true basses are vary rare. This is Partly why True bass parts are hard to find.
Even though I thought I was very trained I found that your range gets bigger as you get older and continue training. IN fact your voice doesnt fully stop developing untill your later 20's. A basses range is techniqullay suppose to get to a High F to low C when fully developed. Baritones are suppose to be Low F to High G#. But I do agree that Tenors get all the glory. BUt The Beast and Gaston are as they should be IMO. NIce deep Baritone voices. BUt I wouldnt rag on your fellow bari's because its most likly you will turn into one. Rag on the tenors. They get the best stuff and still complain.
I realise none this helps your current situation, But there is greener pastures ahead.

south pacific is good..because there are the female roles too...ditto music man.....umm but I actuslly thing beauty and the beast would be a great choice for your school...just because it is such a big show and there are so many roles...plus the beast and gaston are definitely effective with a lower bass voice.. I momentarily thought of sweeny todd...but I don;t think that works at a highschool and JCS..Ciaphas (sp?) is a really low voice..you'd probably end up getting that..even though it's not the lead.

I know i'm an idiot, but i dont see why new adaptations cant be considered, if someone can sing the whole part down an octave it would sound really cool (last supper especially)
JUDAS ISCARIOT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ROLE IN JCS
and if he has a solid F, Lancelot is not too high

TERRIBLY SRRY, I WASN'T TRYING TO START A BASS-BARITONE WAR
(I'M GLAD I DID, THOUGH)
oh, and btw, i'm deffly a baritone in "real life" but sing Bass or Second Tenor at a high school level because of a "lack of male interest"
its not that they're not interested, they just suck no offense all you frosh bari's

didnt you read my post?...im already at the low C...and F...
ive been doing voice lessons from the same professional for three years now...he says im definitely a true Bass...judging from my tone nower notes
he told me that some guys would acutally lose their lower notes as they mature...but i keep gaining lower notes...
he says that if i keep working i may be able to go low like those crazy Russian basses...
hes told me that ill most likely sound like the bass from Chanticleer when im older...(if you hvent heard that guy...i can provide song from them)
i suggested South Pacific to my director...she said no...and she thinks Guys n' Dolls is overdone...and a comunity theater just recently did Carousel...thanks fer all yer help though...

Washington...ive never seen them live...i just have an mp3 of their version of Ave Maria...i have it cuz my Chamber Men's group came in 3rd with it at State last year...so i needed to hear the professionals do it...
i was the only one who could sing the Bass part...
i love the Chanticleer Bass cuz hes the only bass in the group...hes able to balance out against all the other guys on his own...
oh mighty mighty bass...
(hes also got one pimpin mustache...)

I got misguided because someone here said that Gaston and beast should be bass roles. WHen there highest notes in the musical are F and there belted F's. Granted there baritone roles but a bass can definently play them. But keep rocking on those low notes if you can. You would be in high demand if you can project those notes outward. Especially in prof mens chorus's Like Chanticleer or cantus.

whats the range of Seymour in Little shop of horrors?...ive sung Suddenly Seymour before...
maybe i should suggest that show...
...you know what?
im gonna write a musical...its gonna be called "Broadway hates basses"
its gonna be about a cool bass singer who cant get a part on broadway and is surrounded by tenors...and its gonna be the best musical EVER!!!

Haha!!! That's hilarious. ^^
Gaston's highest note in BATB is an F, I believe (Last note of "ME")
The rest of what he sings is just like in the movie. Same key, I mean. Beast's range is similar, but he's *supposed* to sing a G or A (check out the "ranges" sticky on the BATB forum) at the end of the show. could be sung differently.
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is also a good suggestion someone (Big Dave?) made. You need a lot of both guys and girls. Good songs for both male and female lead, but the other girls and guys get good stage time too. Look up "Bless Your Beautiful Hide".

i think im gonna tell he director that we should do Little Shop of Horrors...surprisingly i was able to sing Suddenly Seymour just fine and ive been told hats the highest he goes...i really like the show

if they'll let you do little shop...deffly do it, and yeah, Seymour is a
deceptively low part (but yeah, its no Emile de Beque)
